Hobbit, it's what happens when the Atlantic is kept at bay and an easterly flow establishes itself. You should normally see those clouds coming back, from the west and hit the cold air coming from the east on sunday whilst East and West start to scrap above our heads. Phenomenal set of models today btw, it's looking like turning seriously cold. Wednesday seems to be the day when the Russian high influence really starts to be felt, starting in the east. Sunday evening, Countryfile forecast might bring a huge smile to those starved of proper winter weather.

Thank you MS. Hope you're right about it turning cold, would love to be able to get out onto firm ground, rather than the ankle deep mud that has become the norm.

Bleaklow had a surprising amount of snow atop too, most enjoyable (and hard work as not frozen under...), more than Ingleborough (did both this week-end).

I was out yesterday on Fionn Bheinn near Achnasheen - the conditions were good, at least for the start of the day. Plenty of snow, but neither too deep nor too soft to make it a chore. I'd put up a picture, but OM's saying there's an application error. Photie here though, if you feel the need!

Looks good Scott - makes me feel inordinately jealous, as I've sat here today working on a funding proposal for work, while the faintest hint of snow on the top of the Campsies has been cruelly taunting me to come out and play.
From what I can gather, this Russian influence isn't going to generate much in the way of snow, at least not for west-central Scotland. Pity, as we've had precious little of the white stuff all winter.

Was up Ben Nevis on Friday - soft deep snow - very hard work.

The weather where I am today... very very cold but very very stable.... skiing at the weekend too, God knows what the temperature was on the downhill run... over -50 I would say!

So what's the outlook Moonlight Shadow?

For immediate forecast check the usual websites although bare in mind there is still some uncertainty as to the extent of the snow event this week-end. Longuer term, it's looking pretty good, no Atlantic messing things up for February I'd say, mix of high pressure, easterlies and northerlies. Indications of a Greenland High forming which would mean really nice weather up north (cold/sunny) for the second half of the month. I'm very glad I kept a couple of days in the kitty for hols!

Lakes had plenty of snow the weekend as mentioned. Was quite suprised. Also managed to do pinnacle ridge in winter conditions (under supervision on a mountaineering course) was extremely fun. Snow was deep in places and quite hardwork did notice a lot of windslab though
