This "compression" thing confuses me. (Not very hard to do).

I can understand it for anaerobic sports like weight lifting, sprinting, were you want short bursts of energy and your not really relying on O2 for energy/power.

For Aerobic how does it work? Surely it doesn't make sense.

Wearing tops that compress your chest/lungs, even by a little bit, would that not make breathing harder? I'm old enough to recall when if you broke/cracked a rib, you got strapped in a bandage so tight it was hard to breath. Now they don't bother with any type of bandage.

Compressing the lower body, don't see how that works either. Your compressing the bloodflow to the biggist, strongist muscles in your body, eh! why? "Control" Lactace Acid, does it not make more sense the better the bloodflow the more removed?

What about body temp. control? If these garments are compressing your body, it must mean that not as much blood/ heat is getting to the surface, so you won't be cooling down as well as normal and if don't take extra precautions can overheat.

Me.... I'll just have a tepid shower and a good streaching session.

They dont seem to be widely used in competitions for aerobic events like running, though Paula Radcliffe has used compression socks for some time. I think they are more widely used in training, so it might be the big benefit is in recovery rather than absolute performance.

Chatted with one of the aussie designers of 2XU a couple of years back and was told to keep wearing them after you've stopped training, this to get the maximum benefits.

Well the Olympics will be a good opportunity to see if they aid performance, or at least dont hinder it. What other track or road athletes other than Paula Radcliffe are using them in competition?
