Sounds a bit daft perhaps...but I'd like a little thermometer to take with me so's I can know the temp.
Used to have a souvenir keyring from Acapulco with a thermometer on it, but it was bit crap tbh!
So anyone recomend a good, small, light, rugged thermometer that I can take on planes and attach to my pack etc.?

Recta do a small keyring-type compass and thermometer which is surprisingly useful. The thermometer seems as accurate as you'd need for casual observations and the compass is actually quite handy for a quick direction check (I keep it on the shoulder strap of my rucksack).

coghlans digital dangler----about $8 from the states---accurate watch and minimum/maximum thermometer----not waterproof-----regards lr

The Recta ones are cheapest from 7 Day Shop, at £7.29 (Cotswold are charging £13.80!). There is a digital thing on Ebay for £7.26 ($12.46/£8.15 from DX), and DX have a cool looking digital barometer/thermometer, etc for $22 (about £14), and some similar ones which are a bit cheaper. Just noticed on Deal Extreme - seemingly very similar to the Recta ones, but costing just $1.65 or £1.05!

Thermometer Mate said one of these is excellent, sorry, cant remember which one... ... But I'll ask him and post when i find out...

My mate had a Silva one with a compass on it. But the temperature side of it was so small that you wouldnt get an accurate reading. I just googled Silva thermometer and found this it also gives similar size options. But there are loads of options

Any small min max ones you can leave outside the tent overnight for even more accurate brag rights on how cold it was?
|
 |
There should be one that can do that (God knows there must be a market), but the only one that sprang to mind is the (relatively) small thermometer we bought from Boots years ago when our first child was born (maplin do much the same thing). A quick google brings up greenhouse thermometers like this - the Play page for it says its 78mm x 38mm - so pretty small. The solar part is handy.

Neat! Liked the look of some of the others shown on the amazon page.

Nice one Mike; only a fiver from Play too. I agree with Rosswm about leaving it outside for the cold bragging too! I'll add this to my winter kit list!

Yeah Min/Max would be perfect. As would a display you can actually read easily which is the big problem with all the keyring compass/thermometers.

That's a lot of dough ain't it Duncan? I can get one of the min/max ones delivered straight to home, I'd have to get one of those Silvas surreptitiously delivered to work (along with the new Petzl Nao maybe)

A bit more expensive but more than just a thermometer is this from Ultralight Outdoor Gear. You get a thermometer in both C and F, a liquid-filled micro-compass, magnifying glass, 8cm ruler and spirit level(!). I've checked the thermometer against a full-size one and it seems very accurate. Compass isn't bad either as a back-up. There's a couple of holes in the baseplate to attach a lanyard. Well worth 12g of anyone's pack weight.

I have ordered the min/max thermometer from Play today: £4.95 inc. delivery. The feature I like is the min/max readings: no need to stay awake and watch how cold it has got! I'll see how cold my pitch is in a couple of weeks now!

I've got an ADC Summit and use it for altitude and temperature mostly, the wind guage reads light I think but it may be the way I use it. Quite interesting in a geeky sort of way to see the temperature changes over night on the graph. Steve D
