Looking in the latest TGO I might look at walking Peddars Way and North Norfolk Coastal paths once I've finished the Cotswold Way. I understnad that Peddars Way follows an old Roman road for a way. Nice easy flat walking then
Personally I like visiting stone circles and barrows but don't go out of my way on a walk to include them or plan my walks around them. I do plan the occasional overseas trip to see ancient historical sites. I've been to Jordan and seen Petra. I've seen a few sites in southern Turkey and I've seen the pyramids in Egypt. I'm waiting for the day I can see some pyramids in Central America. I guess I'm just fascinated by the physical and financial effort put in to these enormous religious constructs and that includes cathedrals. The engineering is impressive but it's the raison d'etre that fascinates me. So back to Avebury then?
After many years pondering it, including debate on a dedicated forum i own, i've come to one definite conclusion, i haven't a bloody clue.
Religion, a symbol of power and status, i dunno, something certainly motivated them but what that motivation was i've yet to draw any firm conclusion personally.
I mean, just take a look at the great mounds, Silbury, Hatfield, Marlborough, wtf. ? !!!
