Bugs and slugs would be my only concern when sleeping under the stars. Quite strange someone would do that abroad where the range of disturbing night creatures can be dramatically more serious (venomous snakes, wolves, bears, scorpions, spiders, etc, etc) and not in the UK...
It is only bugs that put me off tarp camping. I'm not scared of bugs but when I get bitten I get a really bad reaction. Bites on me last over six months! I just cannot stop scrathing the fucking things!
I spent many years bivvying out with a cheapo sleeping bag on top of a sheet of plastic. No ground insulation. No canopy of any sort above my head. If it rained, I got wet! However, at no point did it ever occur to me that a fox would bite my face off... or for that matter... ANY kind of wildlife would have a go at me.
thats because they have to chew through the beard first and give up halfway
I've slept out under the stars on many occasions. Foxes are fine, tho did have one attack my tent with me in it once. But I was close to being attacked by three otters once, adult and two babies. An interesting experience...
