Bugs and slugs would be my only concern when sleeping under the stars. Quite strange someone would do that abroad where the range of disturbing night creatures can be dramatically more serious (venomous snakes, wolves, bears, scorpions, spiders, etc, etc) and not in the UK...

I spent many years bivvying out with a cheapo sleeping bag on top of a sheet of plastic. No ground insulation. No canopy of any sort above my head. If it rained, I got wet! However, at no point did it ever occur to me that a fox would bite my face off... or for that matter... ANY kind of wildlife would have a go at me.

Once woke all panicky thinking something bit me on my nose

     There is nothing wrong in being scared of foxes. I have a mate who is scared of rats,

     he zips his bivvy right up. I got visited  by sheep last time.
