Do you ask for one ? Do you expect one? Just curious.

Always ask for one in an outdoor shop. I sometimes have to show a membership card but you can join say the LDWA for about £10 so no hardship to join and I always get that back each year and then some. One shop gives me 10% off even when I forget to ask for it. One time I walked back into the shop telling them they under charged me and they said it was the discount of 10% that thye knocked off for me!!

Can't remember the last time I paid full r.r.p. for anything to be honest. Permanent sales combined with timing my purchases mean I've never needed to ask for a discount.

I can understand if you are a member of something that has an agreement with the shop but to just ask because it's an outdoor shop i find strange.
|
 |
in some shops i ask if a discount is available especially when purchasing multiple items. they may say yes or no. the discount i suggest may be throwing in a low value item for free whcih often works better. i've discovered that in many shops you only have to ask and they are happy to give you a discount especially if they recognise you - i'm always very polite and courteous (most uncharacteristically) in shops and more than happy to discuss items with the staff.

I always ask if there's a deal, politely . And being recognised is good - I am in our local shops - and it's nice to say Hi back. Last time I was in one of them the woman said "Oh hey we've got those boots you were after in now ..." - it's a really nice feel. However, I do buy a lot on line, partly as some of the shops I like are t'other end of the country, but I've got to know folk in them too and can ask if there's a deal.

I always ask for military discount and usually get a good deal on my AMA card in walking shops but don't have any local to me.
In my local sailing shop I always get discount and never ask for it, I've never paid full price n my local mountain bike shop either and am very loyal to both shops due to their friendliness and good service.

I always ask for a discount on any outdoor gear (and other stuff) costing maybe £20 or more on the assumption most businesses would rather make a bit of profit on an item than none at all. After all rrp is just that -- recommended, not compulsory. I'm much more likely to go back to a shop that gives some discount or other inducement.

 |
I used to get a 10% discount in my local independent but I never asked for it.
|
 |
I always ask "What's your best price for cash?", no harm in trying.
It usually works better in the independent shops than the bigger chains though.

Tiso's will not give discount during normal, but they arrange evening opening for local outdoors clubs and everyone gets a 15% discount on most stuff (10% on books, boats and GPS, 20% on climbing hardware). No need to ask for it.

Blacks/Millets give a discount to members of a huge range of organisations - BMC, military, scouting etc

Nowadays cash is not an incentive for a lot of businesses as it is a hassle to actually have to take cash in to the bank. Most people use cards for payment these days so they can now only bank cash less often but if everyone started using cash in order to get a discount they'd be back to banking more often. Or at least that was what one retailer told me. I wasn't buying that time just generally chatting after they'd served a guy who'd asked for discount for cash. Politely turned down and he paid by the preferred card method. If they give discount for cash then it is more likely that they'd give you the discount anyway just to get the sale in. The cash bit is irrelevant when compared to their desire for the sale!! The Blacks scheme was that the club official passed on the details of any members who wanted thee 10% off discount card. Blacks got a mailing list and members got 10%. That system was changed last half of 2011 I believe but I can not remember what it was changed to. I got that discount arranged for me (without me asking) by two different organisations but have never found anything in those shops worth buying really. Well, why go to blacks when you have the climbers shop, ultimate outdoors, nevissports, needlesports, mountain factor, epicentre, adventure peaks, gaynors, cunninghams and lakes climber near to you!!!! North Lancs / Cumbria is a good place to live for gear shops!! BTW CLimbers shop knocked their 10% discount for clubs on the head a few years ago and just offered better prices to everyone. Then they brought in a loyalty card. You filled in a form which went onto a database and you got a 10% off card on almost everything. Pick up a leaflet or just ask them if you are buying from them!! Can do it over the phone. It is really just your name and address and email that they need IIRC. Worth it I think

I've walked out of a shop in Keswick because he wouldn't give me a discount. I knew one along the street would and told the guy that.

Wurz Why do you think you should have got a discount in the first shop?

Good point TP.
Last year i bought a car for the wife, took cash out and made the garage an offer of £300 less than they were asking. They weren't interested. They said they would prefer a card payment.

Addick, I didn't think I should get a discount. However, I merely pointed out to the store owner that his competitor a few doors down would give me one. He declined to match the offer so I went up the street and bought it for less. just to add the 1st shop hadn't done anything marvellous, given outstanding product advice, etc. I knew what I wanted and walked in to buy it.
