Could this be the future? Anybody actually used one? What's next - location aware clothing, gps googles with projected route on-screen, expandable heated backpacking domes with build in streaming music systems????!

Is not getting cold and miserable not part of the fun?

Feeling a bit luddite today - fantastic conditions and I'm stuck inside with a computer. Cheers.

It appears to be similar to the one Maplin used to sell but now seems to have been dropped from their catalogue.

At least they're made in the UK! Interesting in that video that that company has also worked with Berghaus before. If something like this could be made into gloves that are actually comfortable to wear it could be a hit for people with very bad circulation.

Heated body warmer- available

Location aware clothing - available or coming soon (few months)

GPS Goggles - available

Heated domes tents - not quite backpacking weight unfortunately

Also iPod and iPhone control - available

Android Apps - being written

Lots going on with wearable technologies. Apparently I'm giving a paper on the subject at a conference. Knew I should have kept quiet.

Are you sure...?

Could you point me to some; it's something I've been suggesting for 15 years (well, an augmented reality dynamic GIS, to be more accurate)...

They're nothing like the maplin ones, they're far superior.

I have the maplin vest and its rather pathetic

I have an exo2 stormrider vest and its truly superb. It is a better model than the stormwalker but the vest is nicer to wear.

There is clearly a difference in cost too though

Thanks guys - and I thought I was being clever 'inventing' all these tools. Need to get more....

Just out of interest and to sound out your thoughts, how about a "compass sleeve"? Since we are used to pointing with our arms, how about if your arm could tell you which way was north, south, east and west? Point your arm at a target and it gives the bearing. Preload waypoints and it'll guide you around them.

(GPS and compass do all of that I know, but it's the convenience of just using your arm, rather than getting something out of a pocket, short battery life etc)

Graham, thanks for the MOD link.  Would be nice if it had more than a few glossy pictures on it, though...  I can't see anything that shows how the projector fits to goggles, or of goggles with a projector fitted...  I had to download the manual to get information, only then did the install video make sense; the projector fits inside the goggles.  I like it...

It's starting to look something like the ideas I had for FIST, when I worked on it briefly in 1997; a virtual-retinal projector coupled to a dynamic-data GIS to project terrain and other useful overlays into the soldier's eye, enhancing his natural vision.

And I've been wondering when this will become available to the public, and skiing was one obvious application (having struggled with the hopeless piste map and lack of piste signage in La Thuile again this year.

I'm sure I've wibbled on about the idea on OM before, but I can't find it in my links system...

Nearest I can find is this or this (BG's comment) or this.

Ah, pehaps it was on UKC, in 2002...   My prediction about eBooks turned out pretty good (cf Kindle).  The head-up display prediction was about spot-on, then; ten years on from 2002, we have them...

'People will use their leisure time to create free intellectual property, along the lines of the GNU and Linux communities, only this will spread into all aspects of life. The problem, as now, will be deciding what is trustworthy, and what is dross.'

Sounds about right, too...

GPS goggles here too: http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/06/recon-details-next-gen-gps-goggle-technology-android-bluetooth/

Same tech as Graham mentioned I think. This was supports android, so I would suspect you could built some augmented reality app, like that one that places the mountain names over the tops of mountains.

Didn't Berghaus have a heated jacket?

I have invented a kit to convert any jacket into a heated jacket. It's consists of 500ml of meths and a lighter. I need some volunteers to help me perfect the re-usable version that doesn't kill the user
