depending on your definition of 'good' and 'cheap' and accepting the basic premise that you get what you pay for:
1) vagabond. cheap, lots of climbers, good social scene, shared rooms with bunks.
2) Ski station. slightly closer to town centre, rest as for vagabond but a bit less climbery.
Both above are c.15E/night.
moving up a notch, the randonneurs in argentiere is 40E a night for a nice room with own facilities, but is a hotel so less social scene.
If you've got more to splash, the hotel de l'arve in cham is about 70E and is a nice 3* with its own climbing wall.

If its for a week and theres a few of you, hiring an apartment is very cheap - should be able to get a 4 person one for 250E.

Hotel Slalom is a popular climbers hotel situated in Les Houches about 5 mins by car out of Chamonix. Prices are between 33 and 4o euro's based on two people sharing room and includes breakfast.

Speaking from recent experience at nearby Morzine I'd have thought you'd have little difficulty getting reasonably cheap accomm turning up on spec at the local toursit office.
Most of these places seem to make their money in the ski season, and quite reasonable in summer.

Hi Derek

We have done loadsa family walking trips and also a Mt Blanc ascent course with a local company and have stayed quite a few times at Chalet Tissieres in Cham.

Its just outside the town centre at the bottom of the Bosons glacier chair lift.

Fab alspine gareden witgh stunning views and a super large traditional chalet.

Rooms we stayed in were lovely, clean and well appointed.

Cost us €32 euro pp B&B abd the home cooked 3 courrse supper was €15pp.

The owners and hosts Renke and Damien were v welcoming and happy to help organise and plan day trips for the family.

I thinj their site is www.iceandorange.com
