Bad luck chieftain - sounds like you had a reasonably cack time of it.

It could have been worse! It could have been Wales lol!
Always look on the bright side of life :)

Dave - just been scouting some of the other topics and came across details of your wife's chicken pox.
Sounds absolutely dreadful mate - although I obviously don't know you (or your wife) I hope she has a speedy recovery.
|
 |
Thanks :) She's already recovering :) She went to the hospital A&E on saturday and they said "midge bites? - take antihistamine and it'll go away" without even looking. You don't get midge bites where she has chicken pox! She then went to the GPs on monday - immediate fast track to be seen first (she did look like an extra from Hellraiser!) and a hospital appointment 2 hours later with the opthamology dept due to it being in her eyes. They took one look and said "most severe chicken pox we've ever seen".
I see a serious complaint to the hospital coming up as early treatment on saturday could have prevented it getting into her eyes (which can cause blindness).

Sounds like you've had to deal with a bunch of complete amatuers.
Unfortunately, it seems these occurrances are all too frequent. ;(

DiCarlo; Just because I'm taking a gamble doesn't mean it'll pay off! I'd hate to be responsible for you getting stuck in Glasgow. The main reason I haven't booked is because JW won't get round to arranging his student bus discount card. Perhaps you should ring the bus company and ask their advice. It'd be ironic if the three of us end up stuck in Glasgow together!
|

 Di Carlo,
Don't worry about that lot - it'll be time for their medication soon. Except Dave - he's still in shock, and should be excused on exceptional grounds!
As for buses you *should* be fine, as it's not actually a public holiday in Scotland, (we have different money too, it can be a bit tricky arriving south with a whole pile of £1 notes - although I did mistakenly hand one over and got change for a fiver. Which I gave back cos I'm a good girl. Not that I'm suggesting anything) but that's unlikely to affect the amount of travelling folk from the 'other place' who may be trying to cram on public transport in order to zip up the west coast. you do realise the bus'll take longer than your flight up?
And there is also a rail link from Queen Street Station in Glasgow.
For info Queen st. Train station and Buchanan St Bus station (where you'd have to pick up the bus) are virtually RIGHT next door to each other, the train station being at the bottom of the hill.
Anyhow I'm not sure how frequent the service is but the saver fare is around £34.00 (there may well still be cheaper apex tickets to be had), and journey time is in the region of 3½ to 4 hours.
And you get more leg room and the toilets don't shoogle so much.
I do think that you (and Alison) should call Citylink and check it out given the appaling road conditions of late. Don't mention it to Dave but there have been some pretty awful landslips in the last couple of weeks.
Also beware the stilleto heeled, crop-top wearing, poly-bag carrying walkers and their brethern attempting Ben Nevis <shudder>
And Dave as a proud Scot, don't take it too personal - we arrange that kind of thing for all Sassenach visitors. I hope Mrs Dave's feeling better, and if not - soon)

Primo - many thanks for the comprehensive post.
Train sounds like the better bet, I'll have a squint at the timetable shortly.
|
 |
Alison - I'll be in the company of two other zooms so I imagine if public trasport lets us down, we'll just fire off into one (or more) of the many nice bars and pubs - and it'll be just after pay day ;)

you shouldn't have any problems getting up north, i saw a bus to fort bill this afternoon leaving buchannan st that was pretty empty. the weather has been appalling up here for a fortnite and most folk would rather conduct open heart surgery on themselves than spend any more time in the rain.
it really is grim and the mossies are getting so agressive that children are being put on leads...
sorry to say this, but don't bother, spend the weekend in glasgow - maybe go the arran for the day.
|
 |
 PhatPhil
Thanks for the post - but nowt's going to stop me and my fellow zooms from getting up on the high ground this weekend.
I'd rather be in the p***ing rain and being eaten alive by Scotlands finest than spend yet another weekend in Laandin.
As Tarby the jolly gap-toothed scouser once said; "let the chips fall where they may!"
|
 |
 What's wrong with Glasgow?
Apart from the obvious - that nearest thing to a hill is treking up Buchanan St?
|
 |
No need to worry about midges this weekend, they ate their fill on us last week! As Glencoe had the whole of August's rain in a day while we were there you should be OK as it's still August!
|
 |
There's NOTHING wrong with Glasgow, Nancy - I used to live there. In fact, I'll be staying with my sister in Dennistoun this Friday and I'm looking forward to some quality curry and carryout! ;))
Saying that, I NEED to get up the hills. Come rain, shine or flies!
|
 |
Oh. I am very silly... I missed a comma in Phils post and read it as "don't bother to spend the weekend in glasgow" and took offence on the grounds of national pride.
I'm turning into one of those scary ex-pats who talks about how great it was in "the homeland". And I only live in Newcastle...
I'm currently on a one woman mission to persuade the atlantic high just to nudge over just a wee bit, and can personally guarantee that there will be glorious warm (but not overly hot) weather and a gentle balmy breeze from the lakes northwards. the midgies have all now contracted a non transmitable from of chicken pox from feasting on the noble Mrs Dave and surely everything that was going to slip has "slupped".
please?
So your trip should be a success.
How have the transport plans panned out?
|
 |
Public transport wise, we've decided to take your advice and go for the train. Got a timetable and we reckon we can dive on the 08.12 without the need to pre-book. One thing at a time though; we've got our fingers crossed BA don't cancel our flight on us.
If the weather pans out as you claim it will, we should have a decent 3 days and nights on the Mamores. Cannot wait!
So you traded Glasgow for Newcastle? Nice move - the quayside's coming along a treat. Changes for the better every single time I go home... shame the same can't be said for NUFC ;)
