September 2005 Mouny Kenya. Walk in and climb Nelion and Batian. An adventure at altitude.
I had it all planned for four of us to go last September but British Airways then stopped flying. They were to have shipped the gear out.
It will be a ten to twelve day trip, porter assisted but we will be self sufficient as possible so expect to carry more than a daysack.
If you have any interest then e-mail me your address and I will forward a prospectus.

David,
The North Face climb up Batian is brilliant. I did this in Sept 98 and continued to Nelion before abseiling down the normal route to the Glacier from Nelion. Very Iced up on the South Face of Nelion so the traverse is the easiest route in September. Have fun.

Thank you for that. Is the guide book grading accurate?

David,
The grade in the guide book is quite accurate. Although we arrived at the crux section in a blizzard so the going was very difficult. Luckily we were wearing Leather Mountain boots but had to resort to some section of aid climbing on sectioned that had quickly turned very verglassed.

We ascended the Naru Moru route to Mackinders Camp. The climb started with a 3-4 hour walk round from Mackinders Camp to get to the start of the North Face route. We'd intended to use the bivi hut on the summit of Nelion but had to bivi below Bation because of the storm. There are a couple of good sites there which have been built up by previous climbers.

The difficulty of the Gates of the Mist varies from year to year but in 1998 we didn't need to use Ice Axe or crampons and we just managed to stay on soft snow or pretruding rocks. It's probably even easier now.

There are good abseil chains down the Normal SW face route of Nelion to the Glacier. As I previously mentioned, there is a lot of ice on the SW Face route in September so would be a very serious ascent route. From the glacier don't be tempted to descend down the glacier as it will take much longer than ascending up to the Austria Hut and following the path down from there.
