I totally agree with Jon's review. I picked up a couple of these cheap at the Outdoors Show (£35 for 2) and have used them quite often since then. The demo at the outdoor show was using extremely dirty water full of floating bits, but the water came out clear and tasted great. As a result I've tested it in everything from dirty to puddles to down caves, and it's never failed.

How does the water taste? In my experience these systems can adversely affect the flavour of lovely mountiain water.

Tastes fine Duncan, a hell of a lot better than tap water anyway.

Hi there, I have had a APT for a few years since picking one up at the NEC (demo was impressive). I have used it pretty extensively in C. Asia, Africa and E. Europe without getting sick. It is easy to use and seems to work fine. The problem has been the bottle. The thread on the bottle doesn't seem to last long and the top pops off/ leaks. I have had 4 filters but have had to send the bottle back twice. The customer service is excellent, but that doesn't really help if you are in the middle of nowhere and need a drink. Also, if it is really hot, it is hard to get fluid into you quick enough. David

Have used one I got a couple of years ago (older shape) on trekking trips to Morocco & Turkey and worked great..

don,t think this is new..I used somethink similiar in 88/89 travelling through africa and it worked o.k.mind you it was very expensive back then.

i used the Aquapure traveller on a seven day trek in Corsica this summer and was delighted with its performance, it provided with me clean waer for the week. it has also proved to be near immune to being clogged up quickly by our soils oin the Peak District and Dartmoor

I've bough a katadyn mini filter for Nepal. Do I still have to use iodine/chlorine? As in another thread, someone mentioned that the Katadyn doesn't remove viruses.
If that's true, then I'm taking the blessed thing back as the guy in the shop promised me I'd need nothing else except the filter.
I can't use iodine for long periods.

It should take out everything except viruses in which case you will need to use iodine.
However, if you're trekking in Annapurna or Everest, there are so many tea houses that you can just about get by without a filtration system by buying lemon or black tea as you go and boiled water from trekking lodges.
I used an Aquapure Traveller as well and didn't get ill. Well, actually I did briefly get very ill, but it seemed to be a viral thing that a lot of people copped in the same area including the locals, so I don't think it had anything to do with the water.
I'm very suspicious of the long term use of iodine, but it's hard to get a hard figure as to what constitutes extened use. If you have any sort of thyroid problem it's a bad idea.

Having said that, this is from the faq on the Katdyn site:
How does the Katadyn ceramic retain viruses? Due to their tiny size, viruses can theoretically not be removed with a 0.2 micron (or any physical) filter. Nevertheless, long-term experience in the field has indicated that Katadyn Filters can retain viruses. This surprising fact can be explained: Viruses have an electrical surface charge that attaches them to other particles or materials. Therefore, the tight pore-structure of the Katadyn Filters removes the viruses attached to particles from your drinking water.

Ignorance is bliss....not directly related to this thread but A guy(who shall remain nameless) that I travelled extensively with in africa believed while travelling that no precautions should be used to purify water as the person concerned would build up immunity. he was the expedition leader and on his fourth 6month trip,I did point out that there are over 70 ailments contracted through water that the human can never build up immunity to but the water on the truck was never purified. I left after 6weeks and many many people on the truck got very ill.

Got one of these a few years ago and loved it! Is a fantasticly simple to use system. Had to retire mine after a local in a Tea House in Nepal filled it up with Boiling water though and it leaked from the seal since!
I also have the inline bladder purification system from the same people and this really is amazing purified water filled up from anywhere and in your existing water bladder!
