Loved the article on "Climbed Every Mountain" in this months TGO what a great way to do it, but either I have gone bonkers or there is a blatent mistake.

Towards the end it says there are 280 Munros and 420 tops?? I always thought (since 1997 anyway) that there were 284 Munro's and 221 tops (excluding the Munros themselves) making 511 in total.

I realise it might account for the changes at some point, but either way it seems way off to me.

Apologies for my being picky but it's in my nature.

Richard

You're quite correct about the Munros - there are 284 of them, or at least at the last count. To quote Richard - darm keyboard!!!

A bit of confusion comes in with the difference between Munros and Tops as the Tables list all the summits as Tops, 511 in total, of which 284 are Mountains.

Changes to the Tables change every so often so the numbers aren't fixed. The last time I did a complete round there were 517 Tops.

I just didn't expect such glaring mistakes from such a good magazine that's all. (reminded me of another mag a few years ago when it became more like comic relief.......)

Recently read you book on the full round of tops & mountains Chris and really enjoyed it.

Thanks for the kind words, Richard. Glad you enjoyed the book.

Some mistakes always slip by. I've just proof read a 150,000 word book. I hope I've picked up all the errors (mine and the editors).
