It's good even very good but not that good! Not even in my relatively limited experience is it the best. HRP in the Pyrenees beats it hands down for starters. Even the Pennine way pips it in my book.
Still, don't want to know it too much, great walk! Even my 64 year old father enjoyed it when we did it a couple of years ago.

errr...does anyone know which walk was voted the best?just curious.

sorry just re read the link...ill go back to sleep.

For anyone too lazy to click on the above, the winning route was the Milford Track in New Zealand.
I'm mildly surprised, but then again, the survey was done by Country Walking, a magazine with a strong UK bias and the experts asked were, presumably, mostly CW contributors.
Then again, how can you say any particular route is 'better' than any other? I've been lucky enough to trek things like Everst Base Camp, Annapurna and the Inca Trail and they all have different qualities. The Coast to Coast can't really match Everest for scenic grandeur for example, but then there's arguably more variety and the beer's definitely better ;-)

I would be interested to know who wrote the article and who the writers and experts were who choose the 50 best list, does anybody know?
I have done a lot of long distance walks and whilst I might put the C to C in my top ten, there are others that I would consider like the Tour du Mont Blanc, GR20, West Highland Way, Offas Dyke and parts of the SW Coastal Path.
I have not done the Milford Track but have been to New Zealand and am reliably informed that there are a number of other walks there that are just as good as and probably better than the Milford Track, I hope one day I shall get the chance to find out for myself.

We have a Coast to Coast here in New Zealand as well, but I don't think that most of those that do it have much of a chance to admire the view. 320 odd Kilometers covered in one day (or 2 if you can't cope doing it in one day) from the West Coast (just south of Greymouth) to the East Coast (just out of Christchurch). It cross a high alpine pass, down braided rivers, over the canterbury plains and to the sea again. Also the beer is good too, if you like Speights. Oh, did I mention that it is an international multi-sport event? Running, Cycling, Mountain Running, Kayaking, Cycling and finally running again.

J G any piccies from that small race? Or even web links would do.

Having done none of the "great" walks, all I can say and why can't a UK walk be one of the best in the world?
Sure we don't have the same scale of things over here. But surely not everything has to conform to the American philosphy of bigger is better.

 |
Sorry, 243Km, was thinking of the distance by road, anyway this has some more info. http://www.coasttocoast.co.nz/ Will try to find some more pic's

Nothing wrong with UK walks and many are excellent no doubt about it. It doesn't have to be far away to be great. Maybe it is just about what you want out of a walk? As we all want something different maybe it makes voting for them a bit academic. As for the stroll for to my local boozer: 8 out of 10 cats say their owners prefered it! So who is to say?
|
 |
I'm amazed it came second not first!
But then there is no accounting for taste is there, Jenny likes Offas dyke, oh well.
|
 |
I'm also amazed, as this story ran in the Nov issue which was out in October! So has been floating around for over a month!!!

 |
so I won't be able to go to Smiths and find out what the other 48 were.......does anybody have a copy and the time and inclination to list them?
