I've really enjoyed reading Colin's extended column this month - and I especially liked his sensible comments about image manipulation.

I too want to know if I'm looking at a photograph, or a collage. They're both valid, but in different ways. I think the point about post-processing is also excellent - after all, "traditional" photography has always made us of techniques like burning, dodging etc. to compensate for the limitations of film so why shouldn't the digital user also do this?

Very sensible comments about the trade-off between weight and "quality" too. I'm so glad I don't lug an SLR round with me any more (it usually sat in the pack anyway, so I'd missed a lot of the best shots by the time I'd found it).

Looking forward to more, but just one thing - Colin refers to technical data about the images used in the article - but there doesn't seem to be any.

I was too busy looking at the photos to read the article... no, no I noticed that too, the article seems to suggest the particular photos that were selected were done so to demonstrate the variety of formats available it is a shame that the technical data relating to what they are has been omitted.

Ohh dear

When you were talking about lugging round and SLR and missing shots, I thought "weren't you bollocked for keeping your rifle in your bergen???"

Oh dear

Sad Cara-Lyn, very sad ;-)

Remember the motto of the US forces:

"Keeping your rifle in your pack means never having to tell your British friends that you are sorry" |-(

I'm getting quite jealous of you folks, reading your TGO's and looking at Colin Prior photo's.

My mag arrived the day I came offshore and I've hardly had a chance to look at the book of Colin's pictures that my daughter gave me for Christmas!

Still, I've got something to look forward to ;-))

PS Cara-Lyn, "mag" in this context means a printed magazine, not an item of military hardware ;-))

But Cara seems to have a "military"/guns/knifes fixation...

so I'd be nice to her if I were you Dick

LOL Noooo! Just that in the company I keep, rifles are a more usual topic of conversation than fancy cameras!

And WD, I'll have you know, I had NO knives on my person at the Peak District meet. Not one. Not even a little one. Not even the tiny one that slots into my wallet. None at all!!!

And SLR can mean either single lens reflex or self loading rifle.

And "shot" can mean shot or, erm, shot.

So that's all clear then. Colin Prior takes very good photies, bit more tech detail would have been nice and some of the lovely people on this forum scare me.
