I thought the whole point of a soft shell was to give you a warm layer with some wind resistance and a level of water resistance?

Why would you want a Fleece that's got the breathabiliy of a 3-ply Gore jacket?

Yeah but i thought this is what we've all been waiting for - a breathable, fully waterproof but warm jacket. Lets face it how many of us just wear a gore-tex on its own? When you do its proabably too warm to wear it anyway so you may as well take it off and get wet. So that means the majority of us put it on over a fleece or some other warm layer, which means .. fleece + gore tex = new gore tex - seperate fleece.
That equation (except for during Summer) looks like it works out to me.

Basically, this is an insulated hard shell jacket. The main advantage of soft shells is their increased breathability over hard shells, which this doesn't have!

hmmm. Seems others want different things from their layers than I do!

The last thing I want is a waterproof and warm layer - losing heat when I'm moving is my main concern! Waterproof and breathable is what I want - usually over a base layer only! My event jacket works well......tho cycling overwhelms everything (including my lungs...)Fine generally tho!

Now, for a soft shell, I want wind resistance, very high breathablility, the option to vent (that heat thing again!), and water Resistance - something that shrugs off most rain! I don't want warmth! I am happy to trade extra breathing for reduced waterproofness.

Could just be the wine of course (smiles). For the record - I have never used P*****, and have no view on it - but a great view out my kitchen window.........

Hacks, i'm in total agreement, i only want a waterproof layer/membrane when it's absolutely lashing it down, breathability is where it's at!

Guy you obviously have some perverted fascination in getting a verbal beating over your immense loyalty to P*****. There’ll be an article on OM soon on a mad guy who’s scaled a large building to preach to the world on the benefits of non-membrane waterproofs, before base jumping of (the parachute obviously having a certain word sprawled across) and running into a local outdoor shop and taking scissors to the g-tex jackets in a possessed rage!

Sorry, must stop fantasising about the coming of the paramo Messiah

Wallace - yes and most softshells are not fully waterproof, which means you always need a shell to stay fully dry.

Hacks, agree totally, and also use Event, usually only over a thin baselayer, for the same reason :)

Do we have a choice in the matter of what we wear? Mother has been replaced by all the various manufacturers.
