Thanks Weird Darren - recovery is going well and I made it to the top of Meall a'Bhuachaille (810m) in the Cairngorms yesturday. The guidebook says 3hr20minutes and it took me 5hours but what the hell?

Cameron - it only hurts when I laugh....or sneeze, or cough....but it getting better.

Worst thing about yesturday was watching the fire spreading on the hill behind Aviemore. The helicopters were trying to get it under control all day.

..that and the sunburn (yep, I got sunburn, in Scotland, in May)

Back to Jan's original thread...design and content of TGO
the cover pic this month was dreadful - too dark and dominated by someone wearing size 18 boots and seemingly leaning backwards. Let's have more covers showing mountain tops, hillwalking or just plain rambling, wide views and vistas, walkers silhouetted, etc.
But a bumper package with the NTS supplement - record number of pages? Good to see items on Berwickshire and Fair Isle - I've never been to either, but TGO needs to talk about areas other than Scotland, the Lakes and Wales. What about Shropshire, Somerset, Staffordshire - all great unsung walking areas?

Am I reading a different mag? I find what Harding writes very funny. The paper it's printed on is non-reflective and therefore readable; surely a plus point. Magazines will always have a wee dig at the others. It's a by product of healthy competition. Try reading "Superbike". Talk about bitchy! The ed team realize we all read other mags as well. I have to agree the boot article was a tad ambitious. Maybe it could have specialized over a series of articles. Good idea about using readers to test gear. Motorcycle magazines (even Emap)do it. How about it testers, or are you all too scared of losing your powers?
Where was Cameron in the m&s list? Surely as The All Powerful/Le Grand Fromage of tgo he should be up there. Too blinkin modest, I say.
Rant over. Back to pub.

Tgo does from time to time cover other walking areas, like the coastal walks a couple of issues ago, but it's not "Country Walking" (thank goodnes).

Another issue with this issue - did anyone proof read the NTS supplement?

There are missing full stops, missing commas, commas in the wrong place, missing lines in the text, even a possible missing half paragraph?

And, how some two of the NTS employees can't agree on the number of visitors? One says that the number visiting the land is about twice that of the number visiting the house etc, then a couple of pages on another one says that as many visit the land as the houses etc - well is it twice as many or as many? Big difference when you think how many tens of thousands visit the build properties....

Oh, and as for non reflective paper - I must have funny lightbulbs because I can only read it without reflections from one end of the sofa and not the other...

Hedgehope - I've never ever bought Country Walking and never will. It's just that there are some great walking areas away from the Lakes, etc. Shropshire Hills are far better and just as scenic than some National Parks (and so quiet and un-eroded too!).

Couldn't agree more tubby. I've just spent the weekend in Shropshire at the Backpackers Club AGM. Had a marvellous walk on the Long Mynd. Fabulous day... it opened my eyes, I confess.

I've lived in Shropshire all my life and see no reason to change. You're all very welcome to visit our fine county, just please don't all come at once!

Last week I rejoined the Backpackers having let me membership lapse last year. Just my luck that the AGM takes place in Shropshire and I missed it!
