This man is poised to be first Briton to climb all of the world's 8,000 metre peaks and yet his detractors criticise him. Why?

It seems a national tradition to find any excuse to knock someone who's successfull.

Maybe if the children growing up today heard people who had acheaved things being praised instead they would have more hopes and ambitions of their own.

The people of today that kids believe are 'achievers' are Colleen McLoughlin (an unemployed teenager with an overpaid, oversexed footballing/thug boyfriend) who has an atrocious shopping habit...Jade Goody - what on earth has she ever REALLY done?
etc etc

JJ's right - unfortuntely the world revolves around money, and we tend to see the same people on tv day in day out, them that watch it that is. As for overpaid footballers, the mugs that pay ridiculous amounts for tickets and Sky TV etc are paying there wages.

who is nit-picking though?. I have seen this issue mentioned many times on here, so my impression is that he's getting a hard time. but in normal everyday life i don't ever hear him mentioned and wonder whether for most people he is completely unheard of, and therefore not subject to nit-picking.
who is doing the criticising?.
If a tabloid, then thats nothing new.
If it is the mountaineering community, then what's the criticism and why?.
Don't know much about him, other than through mention in Trail and links from this site.
reading the above mentioned Independent article, my impression is that he should truly be admired.
do all the criticisms rotate around whether he did/did not help a fellow mountaineer and whether he did/did not truly complete one of his summits?.
or are there other criticisms and nit-picking?.

The UKC / Climbiing community seem to be picking on him for doing something that someone's already done rather than setting new routes, although his ascent of Annapurna was in record time and a new route. The general public don't seem to have any problem with him because they haven't heard of him....and that's indicative of the problem.

What AK is doing is up there with Ellen MacArthurs trip that got so much publicity and recognition, but he gets a fraction of it. In any other country he'd be a national hero, and would be getting daily national news coverage.

Dave, I think the problem is he's from up north. If he was a southerner, then the media would be all over him.
