Pete, OM will be running 2 day Mountain First Aid courses in the Peaks soon in conjunction with one of the MRTs there. Is that the sort of thing you're after?

Ah ha... could be, I need to renew my first aid cert for ML, SPA assessment (as well as brushing up my skills).
I did a St. Johns course last time, which to be honest was a complete waste of time...eg. they say you mustn't ever move an injured person nor should you ever splint etc. they argued that an ambulance would always be 15 minutes away. They didn't really understand that the course was supposed to prepare me for REMOTE emergencies... anyway, I rant...
Yes, sounds like the perfect course so long as it's accredited, 3 year cerification etc.
Any idea of dates? My ML assessment is at the end of Aug so need to get it in before then.

Pete
1st course should run 24/25th Sept. so not in time for you.
Where do you live? As i could put you in touch with some people.

Hi Wayne... shame... haven't made it to a single OM meet yet...
I'm up (or down) in North London... the closer the course to London the better for time reasons.
Cheers

Company down in Bucks does sports first aid
Active First Aid
BTW for ML/SPA/BCU you need a 2 day course of minimum 16 hours contact time aimed at remote locations.
The course must contain some form of written and practical assessment preferably in the outdoors and be certificated for 3 years.
If you check out the MLTE website it notifies you that MLTE do not give accreditation so to speak but will only recognise courses that fit the above criteria.
Interestingly though if you visit the REC website holding a valid FAAW Cert gives equivalence to REC Level 3

Thanks guys... you don't by any chance have the REC website URL... I've tried searching google to no avail...
Will try that Bucks place.
Cheers

Have heard good things about courses run by the British Association of Ski Patrollers (BASP). Details and contacts via their website...I'll be doing one once I'm back on my feet (long story, don't ask!)
|
 |
I would also recommend the BASP course, its first aid geared for the outdoors.

BASP courses are good and aimed for outdoor use, well worth doing if you get the chance. For the ML, SPA etc the first aid course does not have to be aimed at remote locations, that is just a bonus. Speaking to a MIC who admits to taking a bare minimum in terms of first aid.
My recommendation would be to get the required ticket from say St Johns and then when you have time do a one or two day course on Mountain First Aid or similar to specialise. I know that the Mountaineering Council of Scotland run such a course so it might be worth checking with the BMC.

Then again Pete
I know a good HSE approved Trainer and Facilitator, who delivers FAAW, 2 Day Refresher, 1 Day Emergency Aid, O2 therapy and medical Gases, AED, and Mountain and Outdoor First Aid,who as a former combat medical technician has lots of practical experience.
ME!
But then again that would be advertising lol

Thanks for the offer Wayne... but I think I'll do a BASP course up in Hemel Hempstead, just a tad closer to home than Yorkshire :-)
Thanks all for the info
Good luck with the OM course later in the year
