Does anyone know if there is a suitable shop in Dalwhinnie for stocking up on supplies while backpacking? I know there's a greasy spoon but that and a freezing cold bus stop on the A9 is all I remember about the place.

The greasy spoon has a wee shop inside it I think?

Out of luck. I'm sure the wee shop closed a couple of years back and I don't think the filling station has anythig useful (unless you use a petrol stove?)

Though about posting ahead?

I'm curious. How does posting ahead work. Do you address it to yourself at a post office & can you post gas canisters or are they prohibited items ?

The Dalwhinnie filling staion has some food in stock, it's also the local post office.

Newtonmore has a Co-op, open until 10pm if you can divert there (I appreciate this may be a big diversion if you're back packing)

Ecco, aye thats it, you phone ahead and tell the Post Office in question what you're up to though.
Can't post gas, ever.

Mark. depends where you're headed, but there's a wee village store at Laggan down the road.
