Gwern Gof Isaf (SH686601) Gwer Gof Uchaf (SH672604) I parked close to the above sites today and was wondering if anyone had experience of either? To me they looked pretty similar. Is there anything I should know about them, good or bad?
I Stayed at Uchaf last night, The facilities are pretty basic, 1 WC for each sex, shared porta-loo, 3 Showers and thats about it. That said its only 3 quid a night, the showers are free and it couldn't be in a better position for walking in the Gyders and the Carneddau (I like to keep driving and walking along the flat to a minimum)
Not much use without info on the other place I know but hopfully someone else will chip in with that.
Stayed at Isaf a couple of years back (in the "bunkhouse").
The guy that runs it was really friendly, but sadly the facilities are crap. ONE hot tap for both bunkhouses and all the campsite. Two "showers" that just dribbled down the walls. Think there were a couple of bogs, but cant be certain.
Uchaf has got a clean shower / wash area (3 or 4 showers) but still only two loos. So, out of the two I'd stay at Uchaf.
If you're camping there its worth noting that the oggy valley can generate freak winds that demolish the strongest tents with ease. Have seen all sorts of tents absolutely destroyed by the weather. We've always used the bunkhouses, so cant say if its been down to poor pitching or bad luck.
I've stayed at the Isaf bunkhouse, and thought the owner was grumpy, and they have mutant inbred chickens. Facilities aren't great- outdoor loos, and dodgy showers.
I've heard better things about Uchaf, but not stayed there.
You could, of course, stay at Dol Gam - friendly farmer, £3 a night, and free hot showers and a proper loo block (albeit with no lighting, but hey, showering with a headtorch on is all part of the experience!)
Have stayed at both. Isaf is as Cara says; Uchaf is preferable though facilities are similarly basic - showers OK though. Better location too for the nice things at the west end of the valley.
