...in the Guardian Country Diary Monday. Apparently Ray McHaffe ascended Shepherd's Crag "in boxing gloves and on roller skates to win a bet" - is that as impressive as it sounds to a total climbing novice?

Sure I've heard somethign similar before.

At the time I thought that it's actually a very clever choice of silly sounding equipment as the boxing gloves will wedge in cracks if they are the right width and the roller skates have a big rubber lump on the front.

The route you're thinking of is Little Chamonix, which is from memory a three pitch V Diff - sorry, brain not on form - famously climbed, as you say, in roller skates and boxing gloves. Good first lead, but probably not with the comedy accoutrements :-)

It's not quite as outrageous as it sounds, as the rubber bits in the fronts of the skates would grip well enough, and on all the hard bits, there are huge flake handholds, where the boxing gloves wouldn't get in the way.
Still barking mad though, apparently he did it a second time so they could get some pictures for the newspaper!
