I've been eyeing up the sit on top canoes I've seen pootling around the Pembrokeshire coast the last couple of years. I'm now at the point where I've decided I want one too. Has anyone any experience of using such boats with a 4-legged friend? It's only for use in good conditions and dog will have a buoyancy jacket, before anyone rushes in saying it's cruel to take dog too!
I quite like the look of the Perception scooter (not sure if enough room though), and the freedom-2 (2 person, so in theory enough room for me and pooch). The alternative is a Canacian canoe. My main criteria is it's light enough to put on roof of car without assistance.

Sit on tops have advantages and disadvantages. You will definitely get wet, and so will your dog, so you will need appropriate, semi - dry clothing which is expensive. The British climate means that you can't use a sit on top for a lot of the year. The centre of gravity is high, so you will fall off, evan though they are usually quite beamy. They are easy to get back onto. I think your dog might struggle with staying in the boat.

I would suggest a sea kayak if you can afford one - they are drier and more seaworthy.

A folder is worth thinking about - I use a Feathercraft Kahuna, but the over £2000 cost is a heavy investment. The plus side is that you can use it all year round.

Have a look at Knoydart kayaking Systems:

Take a look at the Pakboats Puffin 2

Good luck.

Enjoy.

A good place to ask this question is the community section of
http://www.ukriversguidebook.co.uk
where there's a separate rivers and sea section.

I can imagine taking a dog in a canadian canoe, but not sure how it would fit in a sea-kayak. Put it in the front hatch and rig up some kind of neck-spraydeck perhaps?

Hi Swillis,

For dog friendly kayaks see here:

http://www.feathercraft.com/klond.php

and:

http://www.folbot.com/edisto.html

and:

So you'll see the kayak is no problem, but finding a dog paddle can be difficult...

Hi Pluto.

I can build you a beautiful hand made wooden kayak for you and your dog.

Check out my Kayaks at www.customkayaks.dk

The web site is currently under construction but should be up and running in Febuary.

Regards to you and the mutt, Rich, customkayaks

Kleppers would be another possibility, though maybe hard to track down in the UK right now.

Pete.

I have a inflatable canoe which i use with my golden retriever it is a Sevylor big yellow and black, the dog enjoys it but it is a faff inflating and dragging it..Paddles reasonaby with a double ended paddle but with a canadian paddle you have to reach over the thwarts quite a way...there are smaller versions which are attractive because of the weight but i have gone off inflatables..

I have seen a Blackwater from Dagger canoes which may be possible to paddle solo..

  hope you find one..chris

The Sevylor K79 is an excellent craft to transport a labrador in, however a tad tiring to paddle.
I think you would be better off with an open canoe to transport a dog.

ok, its an old thread. But the Feelfree Moken 12 makes a great kayak for taking a dog along if anyone is still looking. Good for short coastal paddles in fair conditions
