Did you know that within less than a Km walking distance of Deansgate in Manchester theres a Millets, North Face, Field & Trek, Ellis Brigham x2, Mountain Warehouse and Blacks!!!
Plus we have the Peak District 20 mins away and Snowdonia and The Lake District just over an hour away each!
So any single gorgeous females into the outdoors, this is the place to live!!!!!!!! Where are you???

Oooh forgot the Cotswold Outdoors shop too!
yeah but look at the rubbish football teams they have in Manchester.
 Do they HAVE football teams?
<walks off, muttering>
And don't forget Snow and Rock....
.... but then Didsbury can't really count as proper Manchester - it calls itself a village!!!
Tried my hardest to keep our footy teams out of the conversation! Ha Ha. I'm from Stretford, not a mecca for outdoor gear and containing only one small hill or should I say old tip dump but of course home to the worlds greatest football team and climbing to the third tier of Old Traffords North Stand is a trek itself!
Plus living in Manchester an Ixe Axe could be handy around Taxi Ranks on a Friday night!?
Ooh yes forgot about Snow and Rock on the Parkway aswell!

I think I made a similar point (about the plethora of S&R shops in your area) recently. Hell, you even have the TNF at Cheshire Oaks!
Here in Yorkshire all we have is:
a Ski-only minature S&N at Sheffield 'ski-village' which isn't a village it's a centre built on an old slag-heap.
Plus Ellis Brigham mini-shop at Xscape(sp) which is also built on a former slag-heap at Glasshoughton Colliery but it's been done tastefully. The saving grace is a Cotswold at Harrogate which has a small selection of girlie kit.
Apart from that there are only mini-shops in strange places. What was once a great Nevisport in Leeds has become increasingly sportsgear (Quiksilver-stylee) orientated.

JJ, you used to have a George Fisher's at Skipton didn't you, but it became something else.
Being a Yorkshire exile though, I have to agree that the North West is much better served.
Apart from all the Manchester shops, I can call on Field and Trek, Ellis Brigham, Blacks, Millets, and Camp & Climb just to keep me going in Chester on a lunch time. Not to mention the excursions to Outside, Hitch n' Hike etc...
No wonder I don't seem to get out on the hill as much as I'd like!!!

The shops on Deansgate are far too tempting when you work just a few yards from them. Can easily spend a small fortune every lunchtime, just browsing.
Crap football teams though - I'll stick to Leeds Utd!

To be honest the all the outdoor shops i frequent are where they should be in the outdoors...?
And my personal one is ultimate outdoors skipton, called in last week on my way home after having a splended time in the hills and there in the sale was a Mountain Equipment Matrix jacket £135 (bargin) i grabed it with both hands.
And we've got michael Owen too boot..??
"To be honest the all the outdoor shops i frequent are where they should be in the outdoors.." Yeah but no but.... I'd like to be able to try on and buy stuff without a 3 hour car trip to do so. My outdoors time at weekends is short and very precious and if I spent the day shopping I wouldn't get anything else more important done.
...that's 3+ hours each way to the best part of the Lakes - 6 hours in the car to buy a bit of kit? Err no thanks.
 You never mentioned Mr Owen..???
Who is he? I've heard the name but dunno who he plays for - why should I mention him?
If he's not a mountaineer I don't know him ;o)
And the wonderful Decathlon at nearby Stockport!
Warrington is much better. Why? Cos it has all the accessibility advantages cited for Manchester, however, you don't have to put up with Mancunians.

Manchester is the outdoor capital, eh? Funny that mostly we seem to be talking about shopping here though. Where I live is nearer to scotland, the lakes and the dales and probably just as near to snowdonia (well maybe a bit further) but I can go walking, running or cycling on footpaths and bridleways more or less from my door and there are several crags between 10 and 30 minutes from my door by car. And if I do feel the irresistable urge to go shopping I can catch a train to Deansgate in about 50 minutes (including the walk to the train station from my house). OK, I'm further from the peak district but I'd like to see anyone get from central manchester to any decent climbing in the peak district in 20 minutes in rush hour. And where I live isn't that special - there are loads of similar places. Manchester? Pah!

Ok not everybody reads the papers but what about the jacket then...??

Aha! most people forget Warrington is closer to Liverpool than Manchester, and Liverpool is closer to Wales and the Lakes. We too have Ellis Brigham,F&T,the excellent Adapt Outdoors, Millets and Blacks, as well as Outdoor World [Outdoor Megastore] and the mighty Camp-A-Tent in Waterloo. The Adventure Centre shop [cheaptents.co.uk] on the way to Warrington from Manchester is well worth a diversion and is probably one of the best stocked shops outside the Lakes and with very knowledgable staff too. And Wade Smith will probably be giving away a climbing wall soon if you wish to contact them.

Hey Mikey B have to agree, my birth town of Warrington does have some great shops! I often find myself over there at The Adventure Centre and the Outdoor Megastore!
