captain I got through to the final selction of the G4 challange recrutiement in 2002 and I can honestly say is was Awesome, not sure about ultimate as you could apply again but there you go.
weekends of kayaking, climbing, biking, running, driving landies and the like in the trials were great.
didnt get through in the end but seeing as I made it down to final selection weekend out of all the applicants I was still happy.
but I drive a landy, so I am of course Evil personified :)

row "Something to think about for the anti 4x4's in cities? A land Rover Defender 90 will occuply the same road space as the new mini! it also shares the same turing circle." it will also kill/seriously injure adult pedestrians much more effectively too. let's not think about what they can do to children.

But isn't the way it is driven in the hands of the Driver not the vehicle?
I'm sure lorries and buses can make a mess of a child or adult if hit!

Guy, god knows what the green welly brigade will make of the Unimog. Don't draw attention to it lol ;o)
Mind you as it's used to produce biomass for a woodfired power station that makes it carbon neutral i guess :o)
As a BTW i probably wouldn't ever want to own a 4x4 even a landy if i didn't need one for work. Yes it's incredibly versatile and fun to drive BUT economy what economy even on LPG (been there!!), service costs ££££££, and purchase prices.
I'd quite like a Renault Scenic diesel like my old man 60mpg yes please lol

They only do 60mpg if you drive at a constant 56mph and get in everyone's way....lol
As for costs - cost of servicing my Range Rover (major service) is about £30 for the bits and we do it ourselves (not very hard as they are very basic until you get to the newer models). LPG conversion - came with it. Cost to purchase £2500 three years ago. Cost to insurance £120 tpft. OK so its the higher tax group but only the same as a ford mondeo....tyres...remolds designed for 4x4 mud snow use (£45)...and then of course its only actually on the road for the bad weather so 6 months tax per year 6 months SORN
All in all its been very economical but perhaps we have just been lucky.
But back to talking about adverts - what about this Chevrolet thing to the right of me? Don't the make lots of 6litre gas guzzlers?

Ah the joys of running older land rovers lol
The trouble is Sheonaid is that i run a 55reg defender, i have to for work. Average service is 400.00 :o( Fuel economy is 350 miless to a £55 tank fill.

lol tis wee babbies compared to the 1970 and the 1971 Landies i'm supporting. But then i could have an eurobox. Then in five years get another and another so forth. and the int he period i have owned one vehicle which has caused soo many tons of Co2 to produce in the first place. I could have had 5 cars to make up for the one long lasting one. which would then have caused 5 time the pollution for it's production of each one. you do the math! Then there is the cost of scrapping each little eurobox under the EU regs, what impact is there then? Where as the majority of parts in a Series or defender Land Rover can be Reused on other vehicles. So that is recycling IIRC 70 odd percent can be so. So if that isn't environmentally freindly i dunno what is? http://www.4x4prejudice.com/maybe reading the facts before engaging mouth will help?

Interesting reading for a Monday Morning!

Most of the 4X4 drivers around here in south London wouldn't know what a limited slip diff was if you hit them with it. I'm thinking of buying an ex London Transport, double-decker, two wheel drive Routemaster bus but am a little concerned about the red colour being non eco-friendly.
