It was serendipitous to stumble across an article on the Pen-y-ghent Cafe less than a week after clocking in there myself after completing the 3 peaks. But to find the route described in Trail also is no coincidence. I've noticed that on occasions to numerous to mention in the years I've been enjoying both mag's, articles are synchronised to appear in the same month. So I'm mentioning it now.

Sheer coincidence I'm afraid, unless there is a mole in our office in the pay of EMAP. It could be that when PR and marketing companies get our forward list of features they may, inadvertently of course, let slip to EMAP what our plans are but to be fair I would have assumed Guy at Trail would be well above that kind of thing. There's plenty for us all to write about – at different times...

There was a time a couple of years ago when T would feature an area just as we had a meet there planned - like they'd read it on here and had time to do a write-up...

 It's all a conspiracy I tell ya.
I blame the Greys

 Pensioners?
;oP

Long live the reds. I was reading at the weekend the Formby Point (near me) is to become a designated safe haven for them. Three mile exclusion zone.
Saw plenty of dead greys whilst in Cornwall two weeks ago. Must have been about 5/day. Come on you reds!

I kind of expected the denial, but I don't believe you. Of course I haven't kept a list but I have bought both magazines for years and it happens a lot, far too much for coincidence. Please don't respond to this or else I may have to start keeping records as evidence and that would be deeply sad!

Just read your thread starter Phil, what a great word, "serendipitous". Crikey, it rolls around your tongue, that one.
Now, "requiem", that's a good word, smacks a lot of meaning into small package.

What do you think happens then Philip?
Sometimes Trail runs gear features covering the same gear topics as I am covering in TGO the same month. Mostly I think this is a coincidence, sometimes it may be that its the right time of year ro run that feature (ice axes in January for example). Of course, as Cameron says. maybe Trail know what I am writing about and decide to do the same in the same month. I can't see why they would do that though (and like Cameron I can't imagine that Guy would do it anyway). It's certainly not that I know what's appearing in Trail - I only find that out when the magazine appears.
I don't think there would be any advantage in either magazine running something because it was being covered in the other mag that month anyway.

It's that mythical butterfly flapping its wings in a gear shop I reckon ;o)

It'd be nice to think that this level of co-operation exists between the mags, but to to be frank I haven't a bloomin' clue what's going in OUR mag one month to the next, let alone anyone elses! It's hard enough keeping tabs on TGO's content!
But just in case:
January's gear review - silk stockings, lever arch files and car air freshners.
Walks in: East Kilbride shopping centre, Gateshead Metro Centre and Oxford St.
Wildlife: woodlice, cockroaches and barflies.
Eco stuff: Dyson cleaners and Jeremy Clarkson profile (have you read this morning's paper and his quote about his attitude to the environment?)
(Hopefully Guy'll run a spoiler.)

LOL. Just off the top of my head so don't quote me, but I can remember articles on Glencoe appearing in the same month, and on Snowdon. Both very popular I'll concede but as I say I haven't been keeping a list- until now that is! But there are vast areas to walk at home and abroad and whereas you would expect both magazines to cover them at some point in the year, in the same issue is spooky. As for the gear Chris then you are right of course, it is more than likely you will publish reviews at the same time to suit the season. How about doing your ice axe review in Nov'or Dec' when I am likely to be in the market to buy one in advance of when I actually need it urgently. Who knows I could actually find out what I need in advance, price and source it and budget to buy it!

 |
Unfortunately reviews have to be spread over the year so all the winter ones can't appear in Nov and Dec and all the summer ones in April and May. However I do agree that Nov and Dec would be the best months for ice axe reviews and I'll keep that in mind for the future. Not for this year though I'm afraid.

I tend to have to agree with you Philip but I'm afraid if there is any synchronicity it's not of our doing. I wish I knew the answer. Mere coincidence? I suspect it is. We have nothing to gain in publishing the same stuff as Trail or any other outdoor magazine. The only other answer is that Trail know what we're about to publish and try and publish a spoiler. It's not beyond the bounds of impossibility that's the case but I somehow doubt it. I don't know Guy Proctor that well but I really don't think he'd stoop that low. Perhaps someone from Trail could comment???
