Bob's doing such a good job at interviewing anyone who's interesting, he'll be left with interviewing the only people lief i.e. us before long!

I think a Podcast with Peewiglet talking about the art of gear shopping would be fascinating!

John,

Those tarps look more like tents to me (but without inners). One of them also seems to have a built in ground sheet.

How about something like a Hilleberg Tarp - any experience of it?

Just to add to the tarp comments.

We've just ordered some GoLite tarp/tents and are eagerly awaiting the Hut2 which seems very similar to the thing I made for this years TGO except that it closes up completely and look like a normal tent. (Which would have been useful a few nigths I can tell you and to hell with the condensation!) - Uses walking poles.

The Lair is the open version again uses walking poles, but the one we tried out last night in preparation for the KIMM was the Den 2 Shelter. Again GoLite.

The preview pictures are rubbish and I'll be taking my own, but this is a half way house at 1300gms. Tunnel tent design, comes with poles, sewn in ground sheet, single skin, with huge zipped doors mesh/solid, for ventilation. There's also a slight overhang at the door end, so pitched at the right angle to the weather the cooking shelter isn't too bad.

Condensation? Yup, wet but not dripping. I had the foot vent half open and the head vent a third open and could feel a slight breeze across my face at times during the wet and miserable night.

I've used several normal (? rectangular) tarps and whether you pitch them as an 'A', a 'lean to' or a 'flying diamond', they all have a certain amount of condensation, which is due to the heat from the ground, just as much as me. So this Den2 did very well and is ideal for superlight ("but I want a tent") type backpacking.

Like tarps it just needs perhaps a good shake and a wipe down before you pack it, otherwise on the second night it may have a damp groundsheet.

So keep an eye on the old website as these will be in shortly with much better pictures and you can judge for yourself.

Oh and whoever suggested the date thing on the 'podcasts', thanks! There's so many now I need to change the layout, so that will be done too.

Macsen, just visit my site www.backpackinglight.co.uk and click on the 'podcast' tab.

Then click download on any one which takes your fancy. You'll need broadband as the smallest I think is at least 5 meg.

It's an MP3 file so will play without any extra software.

To 'subscribe' ie automatically get updates without having to keep going back to the site, you'll need to download iTunes (free) and install it.

Then go to the 'music store' and click 'subscribe to podcast'. Copy and paste in the URL address which is at the bottom of my 'podcasts' page and that's it!

You'll see whatever I have in my list and you can listen to any of them at will. Any new ones I publish, you will see in the iTunes list each time you open the program and click 'update'.

Brilliant in it's simplicity!

Peewiglet has now been interviewed!!!! and is ready for download along with Steve Perry the chap that walked the length of the UK.

Lots of info from both of them.

Haven't been on OM for AGES, seems like I missed some great ultralight threads! And have greatly been enjoying Bob's interviews on his site. So, sorry if I'm way behind on this one...

I have one of Henry Shires Tarptents, the older model 2-man Squall (~900g) with extended beak which I think is the same model John M used in Oregon? I don't think I'm hugely qualified to comment on its use in UK conditions yet since I only slept in it two nights high-ish in the Rhinogs in windy but generally fine weather. It worked great and looked gorgeous! 5* aesthetics, but am thinking that maybe the weather will be a bit pants for another outing in it this year.

I was interested to hear in the interview with John Manning Bob's obvious concerns regarding condensation. I may have missed the point but surely the beauty of a tarp or tarptent is that they are, owing to their airiness, inherently LESS susceptible to condensation than the standard tent model? I recall reading somewhere that in terms of the physics, condensation on tent/tarp fabric primarily is controlled by air flow across the fabric. Tarps allow more air flow and so generally have less condensation problems (adequate venting is the key presumably).

I think that tarptents may merely *seem* to have condensation problems because there is no inner to hide the condensation on the fly. So as long as you don't touch the sides of the tent you'll be fine (as I think John mentioned in the interview), and in windy, wet weather surely a little misting and a few drips on your sleeping bag are just grist for the minmalist mill to the committed ultralighter? Maybe some of that is just wishful thinking though.

Chris

Really excited to announce this one!

Just uploaded the first interview with Ryan Jordan of backpackinglight.com where we discuss the US lightweight scene.

Interesting to find out we are about 4 years behind the current US scene and hopefully this will lead to a closer understanding of equipment we 'could' be getting our hands on!

Let me know if you find it of interest.

Howdy, Bob

I can't see any of the ones you've uploaded today. I did click on 'refresh' etc. Is it just me?

Thanks one and all. I'm still trying to calm down when talking to guys in the US, as I have so much I want to ask them and find out.
If anyone has anything specific you wuold like me to include in these interviews please email me with the information.
I don't want to looping asking the same questions time and time again.
The next 7 days should see more variety being added, so stay tuned folks!

Needed to tell someone who cares!

Just had a great interview with the head honcho 'Coup' at Golite in Colorado, which is being edited as we speak and will be available Friday midday I guess. Really gets you thinking about the whole lightweight ethos. Nice chap - just call me 'Parky' baby!
