 I am looking for a pack that is bigger than my Berghaus 35L dart day sak but smaller than my 65-80 Karrimor cougar I like the look of the Lowe Alpine skline 55 litre are there similar models out there by other manufacturers?

 I LOVE my berghaus Extreme Guide.
50L (plus 10 in the lid) with a handy split compartment with zip for the bottom...Snow shovel pocket...doubles as hydration pocket. Snow shovel pole loops inside double as tent pole carriers. Snow skirt inside and a loop for rope. It's the beez Kneez. (one problem with it-£100).
I think that the Extreme Climb is about 40L and £80.

 POD cragsac is great. VERY tough, comfy (even with a heavy load). Only small problem is that it costs a fair bit more than LA, KArrimor etc similar sized packs.
But, you get what you pay for...

Also consider looking at the crux A50 - not sure about backpacking comfort but it's a cracking mounatin pack by all accounts.

 David, if you'll be carrying camping gear I'd go for a minimum of 50L, ideally a bit more. Be wary of relying on the expansion area of the sack for regular use, as this is often more uncomfortable or unstable. Go for something a little bigger than you think you'll need, but with compression straps.
Ice axe, pole and crampon attachments need to be easy to use and suited to your requirements. Don't get more pockets and compartments than you really need - they just add weight and bulk and get caught on obstructions.
The main thing of course is that the pack should fit you well and be comfortable, so try on plenty. Include the Macpac Ascent and POD Black Ice, also try the ME 50L sack (Diamond?). All of these are well-featured and should suit your needs if they fit.

Needed exactly the same - looked at the Macpac Ascent and Pod Cragsac but found they were a bit too small.
Ended up with a Pod Black Ice which is superb!

 I quite like my Karrimor Ridge 40-45L. It fits a 2L platy in the side pocket, and other has two iceaxe attatchments. But I dunno how the tie-in point works.

 I use a Lowe "Alpine Attack 50" which seem to suit the purpose for me, Hydration sleeve, plenty of external fixing points, compression straps etc, narrow enough for a scramble or three, 'bout £90 I think

 I have a McKinley Granite IP50 which I'm really pleased with, comfortable to carry and all the features you'd find on a sack more than twice the price. Nevisport - £50.
There is no split compartment but I wouldn't pay another £50 for one on a pack this size.
Worth a look anyway to see if it suits before you pay top whack.

Split lower compartments seem to add at least 250g with extra sewing, zip, divider etc and don't really help that much - it's not often you take the sleeping bag out before putting the tent up in the UK! I prefer a long lightweight ortlieb rolltop as an indestructible liner throughout the whole pack if the weather will be really grim (and bad river crossings inevitable); or an F&T neoprene bag for less wet conditions.

try spraying the pack with Nikwax Texnik type stuff too, I've stopped using liners since doing mine, (still put me wallet & phone in a plastic bag though just in case)
