I am considering buying a Garmin eTrex GPS to use mainly as an additional 'back up' to my compass and map.

Seen the 'camo' version on expansy for around £80 inc delivery. Anyone seen it cheaper elsewhere (not bothered about the colour) or can anyone recommend a different GPS for less???

Any help appreciated!

I've found globalpositioningsystems.co.uk good and cheap.

Agree but the eTrex is £85 without delivery on there. I will keep an eye on it over the next week tough until I make my mid up. Thanks, anymore suggestions?

I did a few price comparisons when I got my Etrex Camo a few months ago and couldn't find anywhere as cheap as Expansys were doing them (other than Ebay / second hand). Great bit of kit - use mine just as a back up to usual map and compass.

Try www.thenavigationcompany.com

The etrex is on there for £84.95 and free delivery. I think.

Watch this space, there may be one coming up soon....
2nd hand about £40.
Expansys definitely cheapest. I got mine from them for £63 (was a "Today Only" offer which they used to do quite often, but haven't seen it recently). Use mine in exactly the way you say you are going to use it and would definitely recommend it.

watch out for the ones one ebay tho as if its an old software version you can't upgrade it to the new one with waas compatibility

If you fancy going a slightly different route. Your local Somerfield/Kwik Save may still have a PDA/SatNav combo pack which you could easily use on the hill. Can easily be combined with Memory Map to give full OS electronic mapping.

All for £129

^^ For 120 the Medion PPC bundle it's a bit of a bargain - so much of one in fact I bought one earlier today.

So far very impressed with it in all respects for the money.

Amazon - Garmin GPS60 for £118 (rrp about £150) and you get a usb cable thrown in. With the basic Etrex stuff you have to spend an extra £20 for a serial cable. Extra bargin - use GPSU shareware to digitise waypoints from maps. The free version doesn't allow you to turn these into routes with any more than a handfull of points.........so, then import the points into Freeware EasyGPS and convert them to a route. Robert's ya mo's bro - detailed routes in minutes all for the price of an OS map!

I got the gps 60 from amazon a few weeks back now, its fantastic.

I would definaltey recomend rechargable battries tho...i got some good half price duracell ones and a 1/2 price charger from argos.

im looking at getting tracklogs as ive played with the demo and think its fantastic!

Of the legit' stuff Tracklogs does look good value.

I brought my Garmin Venture from the Tracklogs website. It was £120, and they have an offer where they give you a free 1:50000 40kmx40km OS site centred map of your choice on CD-Rom.

Before you buy the eTrex, do have a look at the Geko 201.
