How does this kit rate? Is it clearance stock from manufacturers, or is it Lidl's own gear?
|
 |
I'll probably take a good look at some of the more basic stuff on offer. Gloves and socks, cant go wrong at the prices really. Would give a wide berth to the boots and packs though!

Why avoid the boots (apart from the fact that Lidl don't seem to be selling adult boots this year)? My Lidl boots have lasted 400 miles and look good for another couple of hundred miles. I replaced the crappy insole though, but they were a bargain at £17, fine for general walking purposes. In brown they even look okay, although some of the other colours were rather lurid. I'm off to Aldi today to get a pair of theirs.
Much of the clothing I would'nt touch with a bargepole, looks cheap and nasty to me with noticably crap stitchwork, poor styling and yuk colours. But thats just my opinion.

ChiefSilverback, it's not clearance stock, it's their own brand. Or at leasat stuff that no one else sells in the UK. I;ve no experience of the Lidl stuff but have a fair bit of cycling clothing from Aldi which has all been excellent and the walking base layers in coolmax and merino were good last year.

Got two Merino tops from Aldis this morning. . .

Some of their clothing is of very poor quality. The Kids boots that they are doing at £2.99 are in my opinion very good value as most kids feet are still growing and they will outgrow the reasonably quickly, so why spend £30-£40 on a pair that they they will outgrow in a couple of months?

A couple of days ago I was up Scafell Pike with a guy who got all his kit from Lidl. He was happy with it, though I wouldn't rate it that highly. As always on the hills, much depends on weather conditions. Let's say it was probably just as well that it was cool, still air. If it had been cold and wet, I doubt the Lidl stuff would have been much good. There's still a bit of snow up there, if anyone needs to know.

 Anyone been in there today?

I'm going to pop in later on to check out the children's boots. Two pairs for £6 sounds excellent if they fit them OK.

Bought 3 pairs of £2.99 kids boots, they are good had some last year.Socks were £0.99 for 3 pairs (kids) so bought 24 pair and best of all a huge jar of gherkins for £0.99. Not that impressed with the adult stuff compared to aldi.

Got a couple of pairs of kids boots today, they look OK for £2.99 a pair so long as they fit OK. I agree that the adult stuff wasn't as good as Aldi.

Trekked down to Lidl at lunchtime - not entirely sure it was worth the three mile round trip, but I'm sure the exercise does me good...
Didn't buy much - a coolmax Polo for £4.99 which isn't a bad price for coolmax (although the quality isn't stunning).
Two pairs of coolmax/teflon walking socks for £2.99. Don't look bad for the price, but I wasn't tempted enough to get any more partially because I'm a size 12 and they were labelled 9-11...
Two teflon coated cotton sunhats at £1.49 each - probably the best bargain they had. They're not Tilley but at that price I can afford to lose them...
Other stuff I didn't buy:
Trousers - fabric was okay for light summer use but quality was very poor, cut looked horrible. Okay I suppose for £7.99, but when I can pick up Berghaus Abaco's for only £13 at TKMaxx...
Waistcoat/Gilet things - again fabric ok - construction, cut, design of most of them very poor. The black ones that looked more like runners tops looked the best of the bunch. (7.99)
Poles - The telescopic ones were heavy and looked about the quality you'd expect for £14.99. If you're into Nordic walking, the non-telescopic ones didn't look bad.
Shoes - The kids didn't look bad (2.99), the cheap adult ones (4.99) horrible the nubuck adult ones (14.99) possibly not too bad for light rambling, but nowhere near the cheap Hi-Tec quality.
Rucksack - horrible (14.99)
LED torches - didn't try (4.99)
First aid kit - very bulky and contents alone not worth the price (9.99)
I didn't bother looking at the tents or sleeping bags.

Bought some of the coolmax/teflon socks and got the kiddies some shoes, they`ll probably of worn them out in a couple of months but at 2.99 can't complain :)

I thought the trousers didn't look that bad except they have a low rise. Now that's an image to conjure with, hipster walking trousers! I didn't think the telescopic poles were heavy, in fact I thought they were probably a bit lighter than some of the low end offerings of well known brand names. A bit slender though. I didn't need a compass, I prefer base plate types anyway. I agree the rucksacks are dire and must weigh about 4 Kilos but that's just a wild, wild guess. I really went for the underwear but they had sold out of my size except for a pair of short sleeved vests in white.
