Pillar Rock, Ennerdale
This week's scramble is a Lakeland classic leading to Pillar Rock, above Black Sail Pass. It's not for the faint-hearted though...

Shouldn't this be entitled PILLAR Rock? The web wizard has transcribed Dave's article and titled it wrongly - change it quickly before anyone sees it!!

It was written as "Pillar Rock" sent in as "Pillar Rock" but somehow between me and the site it got changed! Thanks JJ, I'll get Susan onto it first thing in the morning :)

The lush vegetation (including coniferous forest) is a bit worrying, maybe another sign of the effect of global warming...

Maybe you should take a rope, a selection of slings, a machete and an elephant gun to be on the safe side?

I've been on Pillar Rock a few times approaching from the traverse path and from Ennerdale and I don't ever remember seeing anything like that photo with all the trees and vegitation. It looks more like the approach thru Borrowdale.

I'm not doubting that it's a photo of some view in the the area (or prehaps I am, because I just can't place it) but of what and where exactly?

I have to say that the pic with the vegetation on doesn't look like the Pillar that I've been on. Maybe it was mid-summer in a good year?

i reckon that second photo has been doctored a bit, that sky doesn't belong to the rest of the photo, there is also a curious green stripe across the bottom, it's almost like someones been playing in photoshop and has pasted the rocky picture as a new layer on top of the picture with the sky then erased the sky on the rocky picture (with as small hard brush) to reveal a more exciting picture???

:-|)))

I think the trees on the skyline are a pretty obvious sign of some crude erasing.

Ooops - sorry. I plead guilty for the mistake in the title, if Dave will plead guilty for the photo:-) I blame it on too much climbing at the weekend - how many routes do you know with the word 'pinnacle' in them?! It should all be right now though (says she with fingers crossed).

Photo was my fault entirely...sorry. It is Pillar Rock, just not the same Pillar Rock! One of the problems with putting sensible descriptive file names is that if they then go into the wrong directory by accident. I didn't check the pics properly first before sending them to Susan. All sorted now though :)

What about adding a section on the safest descent?

South Africa actually JJ :)

On that route the descent is the same as the way up, but good idea putting descent routes in thanks GP :) I'll include descents as from the next route.

South Africa!
Hmmm, as it turns out, the elephant gun would come in handy.

JJ wins the prize. I spent about 2 mins trying to work out which rock face in Borrowdale it was, what a berk I feel.

The OM album is for visual appeal, I have lots of photos showing boring details.

Just had a look at this as I was thinking of heading up there this weekend. I'm a little confused by the description "ropes and protection required; this is as close to rock climbing as scrambling gets" but it being grade 2.

I know that grade 2 is within my ability but surely a scramble bordering on climbing is grade 3 - maybe I've missed something?

Can't speak specifically about this route, as I've not done, it but Grade 3 and above scrambles tend to be the point where the boundaries between climbing and scrambling blur and one person's hard scramble is someone else's easy climb. Whether you need gear or not is always a personal judgement based on your own ability, comfort envelope and experience.

I'll ask Dave if he can be more specific about this route.
