Is the Is the Montane Featherlite Smock a generous fit, or is it one of those items of clothing that you need to buy a size up..(.ie most of my kit is XL, so should I but XXL?)

All Montane stuff seems to be a size below what it actually is - I'm a L for almost every other manufacturer, but XL in Montane.

Montanes website says XXL is 48inch chest, thats a big jump from my little 42 inch chest.

I've got a Velo (Featherlite for bikers) and it's actually sized quite large.

Thinking about it, I will need to get it over my fleece, so I think I may need XXL.

I find the smock a comfy fit, and i have tried it over a paramo pull on top (read fleece) and it's comfortable enough.

I'm XL in all my other gear and find it comfortable, except for RAB, which really is a tight fit. I can just fit into my XL RAB gilet now i've lost a bit of weight!

p.s. the other montane gear i have (krypton and phleece) are generously proportioned (well, i fit in them, YMMV).

Montane tops are very small. I take a large in most things and it was touch and go whether to return the large featherlire smock as it is a little on the restrictive side and thats with only a baselayer underneath. If you normally take a large, go for the next size up without a doubt.

I am a slim 6 footer and take a medium in Montane gear. I am also medium in LA, Berghaus etc so would say that it is normally proportioned. I manage to get a microfleece under the Montane smocks too. If you want anything thicker than that though I suggest you go up a size.

I've a 42" chest and have got the large, but I don't wear it over anyhthing too bulky. It's spot on for me.

Montane stuff is generally quite slim cut, viz, medium fits me perfectly as it ought to, me being a text book medium with a 40-inch chest, 32-inch waist and normal-length limbs ;-)

How come you need XL with a 42-inch chest, it seems a bit excessive unless you're generally built large?

Edit: that was aimed at the original poster btw. One thing with smocks is that they can be harder to put on than jackets, which is worth bearing in mind, particularly if you're big in the shoulders.

I'm a medium in most things on top and I have a medium featherlight smock. And I often wear a thin fleece jumper under it.

I'm an XL in the Paramo Fuera, but found the Montane XL just a little too tight, yet the XXL is quite a jump. I ended up with a Go-lite XL which is just a tiny bit larger than Montane.

Oh, so *that's* what they meant!

It's obviously down to shape because I'm usually XL with all stuff but some manufacturers just don't have long enough arms for me. So contrary to many others here I still use XL for Montane and find the arms etc are a bit longer than some other makes, so they're perfect for me. The answer, go try some on. One thing with Montane their sizes are consistant, so if you can only try a different type of jacket at a local store, just do that and you can be confident in the mail order sizing lottery!

Featherlite smocks are definitely on the snug side for their sizing. I'm a 42" chest with a 34" waist and normal arm length. My L featherlite smock is very snug over a thin base layer and a slim fitting 100 microfleece which is OK by me as that is all I wear up top on the move to about 0°C or just below.
It means that my down gilet fits over them a treat when I stop to rest or to camp.
I wish the arms were just a little bit longer though.

This may be irrelevant for this particular thread, but for those with longer arms than normal I've found Montane to cater well for us.

I believe my arms are 3" longer (each!) than average yet a Montane medium fits me well. This is in the Extreme Smock and the Duality. That is, if you have ridiculously long arms you should still buy the correct chest size from Montane.

[EDIT] I have not tried the Featherlite on.

My Montane lite-speed is size M, I went size up since everyone on the web suggested to do it. But it's really baggy, I should buy it small, I'm 170/88. Before ordering superfly I contacted Montane and asked them to help me with choosing a size of it. I emailed them with my height/chest/ appropriate number of layers I'm going to use it with, they were very helpful and suggested size S, it fits perfectly.
My advice: ask retailer or Montane for advice.
