 RAB Survival Zone.
I've got one, but i've not used it yet. Might this weekend if the weather holds.
It's been recommended by loads on here, including Chris Townsend (i think he has anyway, in TGO magazine article on Bivy Sacs).
You can get them for about £50 and they're lightweight too at 400g.

Rab Survival Zone is a good bivvi bag, I have the pertex version that is no longer available but it packs small and certainly light.

 Hi Mark,
You might also want to have a look at the Rab Storm Bivi. This is made from the same fabric as the Rab Survival Zone but is a full bivi bag which means there is plenty of room inside.
It is made from the same design as one of Rabs more expensive bivi's called the Alpine Bivi. It has side walls which help to maximise the loft of your sleeping bag, so it would be great for all year round use as well.
In terms of weight, the new Survival Zones averaged out (on another thread somewhere on here) at 315g and the Storm Bivi is advertised at a tad less than 500g (I haven't weighed one yet) but remember the storm bivi is bigger.
Hope this helps.

Go get "The Book of the Bivvy" by Ronald Turnbull. No help on bag prices but a cracking read and very relevant....
|
 |
Also, the BobCast with Ronald Turnbull: http://www.backpackinglight.co.uk/page73.aspps: I second what Shing' says about Ronald's book. Got it last year in Stornoway as only general advice book I could find. The only time I slept in a bivvy bag was the night I tried the survival bag. Slept in it in the house (I was in the Scouts at the time) and got drenched in condensation and sweat.

I once did a festival in a plastic survival bag. The only reason i didnt cry was because i was very, very, drunk....

I can sell my Gore-Tex Bivi, used twice. In excellent cond. £25.

rab survival and a tarp in harsher wetter conditions!

I got a TN Discovery light bivvy for 70 from Field and Treck - in store discount. It is a full bivvy and made from the GoreTex Flow material. Go and check if it is still on sale (RRP110)

 hey
depends what kinda bivvy u want (the bag one/tent-like one)
i have heard good stuff about the rab survival one, however from experience the Army ones are the best
i had a flashy £100 bag, and found that my team mates with the army bags were much better off! ie. less condensation inside.
whats more is that you can buy them cheaply on ebay! type goretex bivvy or army bivvy
i was scheptical at first but really they are good

 |
The above is probably true, but be aware that the survivale zone is +-400gm, the army version is +-900gm. It may work better but it ways more than a summer sleeping bag or a good 1 man tent

It would depend on whether you consider price or weight more important. If weight is more important then I'd definitely go for the Survival Zone, but if you're looking for a bargain then an Army surplus basic bivvy bag is pretty much ideal. I picked up one for £35 and it does everything you need a bivvy bag to do. Weighs a bit more than the Rab but it's pretty solid and can't be beaten at that price!

Just given the Rab SZ a blast on the Long Mynds last night with Andy Howell and found it to be almost as breathable as the old model.
I would say, about 80-90% as good as the old one, kepy me dry and warm, certainly light, but half way through the night it was a bit damp inside, which cleared towards the morning. This isn't unusual in Goretex bags etc so wasn't too concerned.
Value for money? Can't beat it!
Listen to the latest podcast which has just been uploaded for the discussion on that, tarps and other kit!

thanks for all the replys, looks like a rab survival zone it is then.
Just hope i dont end up having to spend the night in it stuck on the cullin ridge in the rain! haha.

I haven't tried the old Survival Zone, but I was impressed with the new one that bob and I tried out at the weekend. I wasn;t aware of much condensation - there certainly wasn't enough to trouble my down sleeping bag with microfibre fabric. I was quite impressed - and very impressed for the price.

Don't buy one of the older style ones with a horizontal, or diagonal zip. The water pours in through them when it collects on top, and you then end up sleeping in it upside down.

I've finally found the source for the army goretex (I think) bags which will be the same kind of price. I've got one I've been using for years and a tough little blighter it is too.
Much heavier at about 700gms, but once again excellent value for money. I may have a few on the site in the next week or so, if anyone is interested let me know?
