Just received my new jetboil from the trail card offer [Thanks Moggy for the tip]
but having a problem with the piezo sparking intermittently.Anyone else had this problem or are they just unreliable.

Piezo's, due to their unreliability, are a complete waste of space and weight regardless of what stove they are fitted to.

Take one of these instead.

Can I point out that the link takes you to a site selling drug paraphernalia, and that as I don't 'does it', the name of the site is incorrect.

I carry one of these for sparking off gas. The lighter is in the toiletry bag.

Owen, I had to wiggle the piezo around a bit to make sure it was correctly positioned so the spark would catch. Before then it kept 'misfiring'; now it works without any problems.

(I do make sure I have another means of making fire, however, just in case!!)

The piezo on the Gravity stopped working. Turned out the wire had to be taped, and the sparking unit had to be moved slightly away from the stove to get the spark jumping the gap to ignite the gas. Fixed up after using striking steel to light the stove and get a hot meal inside me. I had first made the mistake of moving the sparking unit to be closer to the stove.

Having had Piezo igniters fail on at least half a dozen stoves, including the Jetboil, I agree with Glyn M. They're unreliable and short-lived. A steel striker works in any conditions, even when soaked. Examples:

Xtremeflint Firestarter

Swedish Fire Steel

The first couple of times I lit my jetboil I created an impressive fireball, as the piezo wouldn't catch. I wouldn't light it in a tent porch! It's the one weakness I can think of in this great stove.

Mine works intemittently now, although it worked fine for the first six months. It sparks ok but just won't light the gas on occasions. No end of twiddling had sorted it. It's easier to just use a lighter.

i had similer problems with mine till i bent the bit of metal the spark comes from, now it fires everytime stright away
