Jetboil questions?

Treated myself to a Jetboil at the weekend and so far I've been impressed with the speed of it compared to my usual meths stoves and also that it's more controlable.

A couple of questions though:

1) Does it benefit from a windshield and if so what one are folks using?

2) How much use do you generally get from one of the little 100g cartridges?

Cheers

This is quite comprehensive

Cant answer the 2nd question as i tend to use the 250 cartridges for extra stability and because i find it hard to get hold of the 100 cartridges here most the time.

i have to say its very efficeint and it has even worked on cartridges that my pocket rocket wont work on due to there not being enough left in it.

ive never found the need to use a windshield but i guess it would help in really strong winds.

Cheers - that review does seem to cover my points. It indicates that, at least in moderate wind, a windshield isn't really needed (unlike with my meths stoves were a windshield is nearly always required).

I'll mostly be using the 250 cartridges too however when packing for 1 or 2 night trips I use a 32L pack and therefore being able to pack a 100g canister in the stove is useful to save space.

In practise I've found the 100gm usually lasts me 6 days using it 3 times a day for breakfast/lunch/tea. Never needed a windshield.

Windshield wise a few of the commercial ones are too short. So try Pot Cosy and Windshield Kit from Podcast Bob.
I have pictures of the stuff on my blog as well in use with a Jetboil. Nice advantage of the stuff is that it stores easily in the rucksack.

I can get 18-20 sessions out of a Coleman 100 canister, depending on the ambient temperature. I've never needed a windshield, I've made a couple but they don't seem to enhance the performance or reduce gas consumption. Occasionally I'll use blowtorch canisters instead of 100s - see here.

Thanks again. I'll probably pick up one of the backpackinglight windshields next time I order from them - even if I don't use it much with the Jetboil it'll be useful for the meths stoves I have.

I've now used the stove in 10-15mph winds and it doesn't seem to be particularily impacted by those sorts of speeds other than being a tad shaky when a small cartridge is used (I think that order from backpackinglight will also include the stabilising feet they sell).

Instead of messing about with a windshield and stabilising feet (think extra weight and bulk) you could protect the stove from wind with your pack, or use natural features such as a rock, wall, or yourself even.

The Jetboil is very economical compared to traditional canister stoves. I now just take a full 100g canister for anything up to four days, depends on how much tea and coffee you like to drink I suppose.

Something I've noticed with this stove is that it seems to run better on the 100 canisters than the 250 ones. When the 250 canisters start to run down the performance of the stove drops off much more than it seems to with the 100 ones. Has anyone else noticed this or am I just imagining it?

Top tip: If you are storing that 100 canister inside put it in a plastic bag as it tends to leave a nasty ring of rust at the bottom of the mug!!
