Giving up on Aloksaks

Aloksaks are strange beasts. Sometimes they seal up and stay sealed no matter what. Then next time they pop open if you look at them funny.

Was up Ben More Coigach this weekend and was smug that it was raining everywhere except on me. Then discovered that a bottle of apple juice had leaked in my bag and into my 2 open aloksaks containing emergency items and medical kit.

So that's that!

When they work they are very good, though. I think they are less likely to pop open if you ensure that you get all the air out first, so that when sealed they do not resemble a baloon because if they do and lots of pressure is put on them (as it will be in a rucksack) the ziplock mechanism is likely to be forced open.

It's maybe not a good idea to put unreliable containers containg liquid inside the pack anyway. Just like most people store meths well away from harm, perhaps you should your apple juice!

Aloksaks are unreliable, I would NEVER trust them to keep anything of value dry.

...having said that, I have one 12"x12" and one 9"x6" unopened in their packages if anyone wants them - £5 inc 1st class postage.
I got a pack from BPL.co.uk to use inside a drysack. I haven't yet found anything to store in them, but I wasn't intending using them to replace a drysack.

I got a pack from BPL too. The A4 one came in handy last August when I flew 2 days after all the security stuff kicked off and all I could take as hand luggage were my documents in a plastic bag....

And the smallest one makes a great 'mini-mapcase' if I print A4 maps from the PC, or scan and print a scrambling route say - it folds up and fits in my chest or trouser pocket - great for on the bike or half-way up the rockface.....

But no, apart from that, not found a good use for them!

The OP version is good for freezer bag cooking as they are gusseted and can be reused. The smallest ones are good lightweight wallets and for keeping a fistfull of bogroll in and my 12 x 12 map case has been going strong for a year now.

Why don't you try these from Lakeland Plastics (lakeland.co.uk)
AnyLock™ Bags
This is the first time we've ever seen airtight food bags like this!

Pack-Mate®, the experts in space-saving, have turned their attention to the kitchen. An innovation in food storage, these ultra-tough bags fold down to just the size needed - no more using a whole box for a few leftovers.

Fastening with a slide-on rod, they save valuable space in a cupboard, fridge or freezer; take up hardly any room when empty; and can be reused many times over.

Packs of 8 bags and 4 sealing rods.
