I read a review of some Bridgedale Endurance Trekkers in Trail (I think) a bit ago that mentioned asymmetry in the fit.

I just received some in the post and noticed that each sock has an 'L' on the toe. But does this refer to the size (Large) or have I been sent two lefties?

Oh, the confuzzlement. :-(

It's for Large. It caught me out, just for a second of course, when they started doing it.

The Bridgedale socks we reviewed recently were left and right footed, the 'left' and 'right' were inside the top of the sock. The 'L', as ptc says, is for large.

Some of Bridgedale's socks are asymmetrical, and some aren't. I was sent two pairs of asymmetric socks - only there was a problem. I got two left socks in green and two right socks in blue. Naturally, I raised this with Bridgedale, but they only want me to try my damndest to wear them out, and they're not too bothered if I'm colour co-ordinated, so if you see me with odd socks, that's why. If you put the socks on the wrong foot, they feel odd, so it's quite obvious they're made with a right and wrong way to wear them.

I,ve always wondered , so much time and effort put into padding here breathability there , and few socks are made to fit left and right feet .
Also, while we are on the subject, what about the coverall of "fits sizes 7-11 " how can that be , surely for optimum fit they should be size specific like boots .

x socks are fitted for left and right feet and you know instantley if you get them on the wrong way by the feel. Never tried the bridgedale asymetrical ones.

Symmetrical socks become asymmetrical after the first time of wearing in my experience, at least they do if they are a reasonable fit in the first place. I take care always to wear the sock shaped by my left foot on my left foot subsequently and so too with my right.

My feet are asymmetrical (I have a unilateral CTEV , or clubfoot as it is commonly known) so am one of the very few who benefit from the fact that socks are in wide size brackets! My left foot is about size 11 and my right is about 8 1/2! Buying shoes and boots has always been a bit of a bugger for me as I can't really justify paying for two pairs (and even if I did, it wouldn't help much as my 'small' foot is inordinately wide!). But it makes me think ‘stop whining’ to any of you grumbling about whether asymmetry in socks is a performance issue :), or whether a half-size in a boot makes that much difference.

On that front I feel it appropriate to thank Boreal openly on the forum as they once sent me a free ‘spare’ climbing shoe in the correct size for my small foot when I bought a pair of Aces in the mid 90’s. After being resoled a couple of times, they are still going strong and the only pair of shoes to fit me properly in my whole life!
