My husband and I bought a flashlight from www.outbacklights.com and didn't think it would be as bright as it said, but it's no understatement when the description says bright. We used it to go camping and really is the best light we've ever used. I recommend their Tactical LED flashlight to anyone. Also, it's not huge and heavy like a maglite and is small enough to go in a pocket, which is very convenient, as I'm sure any camper would know.

and I bet that you're in no way connected with outbacklights.com.

Soooooo cynical, but probably true :-(

Funny, an 'Aussie-feel' company, but based in Utah...
As any camper knows, headtorches are much better than handhelds.
Anyway, what's a 'flashlight'..?

heh, sorry it sounded so advertising-ish. I'm not connected with that site, I just really wanted to share a good find with you people. And about the headlamps, I think they actually have one on there

Anyway, what's a 'flashlight'..? and why does it take two people to buy one? :-)
It doesn't take two people to buy one :P We just like to choose things together if we're both going to be using it.

Alternatively, if you want a UK* source of all things LED, from individual LEDs, through 5W Luxeon and other jobs, to torches, you could try Ultraleds. At least they tell you what batteries the torches use, and quote an actual figure for light output. And they don't pretent to be Australian... A 120 Cd 1AA torch for £3, for instance... * since, whilst everyone is welcome on OM, it is predominantly a UK-based website.

Ah two people to buy it and two people to use it! Flipping complicated things these flashlights! :-)
Sorry Jill it's a sort of English humo(u)r thing.
Maybe it'll be good for you UK'ers to get a little American influence.
Only kidding. The last thing anyone needs is American influence. :)

For camping use I can't imagine why anyone would buy anything other than the Alpkit LED headlamp at £5 posted.

Except...my straight from Hong Kong Cree Q5 headtorch knocks out 220 lumen - twice as much as the Fenix...and cost under £20 (runs for cover from the incoming from all the Fenix/handheld lovers)

Haha, I'm not that obsessive! Out of interest, what are the details of that one - batteries, runtime, power regulation, water proofing, etc? What I would say about the LD10 is that you get a nice smooth beam and, despite looking a bit er... dodgy, this is the best accessory ever: http://www.fenixtorch.co.uk/accessories/fenix_lantern_diffuser.html

I like the from 4Sevens in the States a lot at the moment and am considering getting a Quark 123² R5 soon. They seem to get good reviews over on Candlepower forums too. http://www.candlepowerforums.com http://www.4sevens.com http://www.4sevens.pl I'm a big fan of the Fenix flashlights but think they have gotten a little expensive recently with currency fluctuations. I think ITP and 4Sevens make some great alternatives. John

Matt, this is the baby. Batteries are AA (4) - runtime...well, havent had to change the batteries yet (I use the torch every morning for about an hour on my paper round since Christmas and have used it one the hill for several hours) Regulation - it seems to be regulated - is waterproof (ish) - as much as anything is.
Fair enough - I think we were after very different products though. I got the LD10 because I wanted something small, light, regulated and certified waterproof which I could use for everything, and I didn't mind paying a little over the odds for it. I can use it as a head torch with the strap, a normal torch and an area light (which is really handy in a tent) with that accessory I posted earlier. On the brightness side I don't think 120 lumens is too bad from a single AA cell, and it'll do that for an hour and a half - I certainly don't struggle to see with it. At the other end of the scale the 9 lumen setting will run for 34 hours, and there are various other levels inbetween. If you want longer life or more lumens (180) you can buy the body of the LD20 which takes 2 AA cells and attach it to the head of the LD10.

Indeed...but I wouldnt be able to see anything at 9 lumen and, when walking, 1 1/2 hours is simply not long enough... Its horses for courses
