Help im looking to buy an insualting jacket and the one that looks the best to me are the montane prism, I need the jacket for wearing at camp or stops, walking on very cold days, and going to the pub on cold nights

Has anyone got an idea how warm it is for example would a 100 weight fleece and a wind shirt be just as warm, or should I go for the rab genarator (no hood, no full zip, bit fugly for the pub, £15 more)it would be nice if its a warm as a 200 weight fleece.

I have the prism, although I'd struggle to make a definite comparison with a fleece, as they're different animals. If I was pushed, I'd say it's no warmer than a 200 fleece. I run hot and find mine too hot to walk in except on very cold days (remember them?). I don't think it's as warm as the generator (less insulation?) but is more versatile as it is a jacket (not a smock) and has a hood, which I find really useful (I don't get on with hats). It packs fairly small, is light and can be put in the bottom of your sack in the cooler months and forgotten about. It's great at rest stops and even shrugs off a bit of rain. It's one of my favourite bits of kit and I chose it over the generator for the reasons above.
Hope this helps!

Mine is currently in the local Sorting Office...

I'm hoping it's as warm as my older Montane synthetic insulated smock (cant' remember what it's called now! It was the one before the Toasty???) - which is definately warmer than a fleece - but i've only got a parammo mountain shirt as a comparison, and it's probably warmer than that.

It looked good too, someone in the Lowe Alpine store in Dublin asked me where i'd got it from as he fancied one himself. Hopefully the prism will serve just as well

I've got one of the Montane primaloft insulated jackets too and it's excellent. I've only worn it twice when actually moving on the hills, on icy Highland mountains, cos it's very warm. Spot on for rest stops/belays/wild camps — not as warm as a down jacket, but fine for me on all the winter days I've been out.
My only major criticism is that the unlined hood is almost useless.

The Prism isn't warm enough for what you want IMO, it only weighs 360g in size medium. It's hard to say if it's as warm as a typical 200 weight fleece jacket. I'd say it is if you've got the hood up and cinched down and the zip is done up fully. In any case the Prism is far more versatile then a fleece jacket. It an be worn by itself over a base layer or used as an insulation layer under a shell jacket or used as a throw over jacket for stops (like a belay jacket). I hardly took mine off for a three day trip in May and I didn't find it too warm for active use, although conditions were quite cool for that time of year.
