Paramo smell

Ok just wanted some of people's thoughts.

I know there are lots of paramo users here.... i have a few items of clothing... the jacket and salopettes are brilliant for low abrasion environments! But there is something stopping me from being a true convert.... the jacket smells!  not as bad as used base layers but pretty close.   This is definitely one area that paramo loses vs. a shell and fleece combo.  Shells never really smell.  Fleece can be washed endless amounts of time.  Airing out hasnt helped too much.

I should wash it i suppose, but the DWR is still very good and id like to keep that intact for as long as possible.  dont really want to constantly wash and reproof even more considering its already a high maintenance piece of kit

any thoughts?  lower my standards?? haha

wash it in nikwax tech wash and if need be reproof it to be on the safe side with Nikwax direct wash in

exactly the minor problem of why i havent truly converted... a wash and possible reproofing at the end of each trip...

If it's really whiffy after one or two outings, why not just rinse it through with some pure soap flakes and water? If you hand wash it you won't even have to bother with flushing through the washing machine.

My P***** stuff doesn't smell bad. Neither do my base layers. Maybe it's bacteria from your sweat building up?

Fleece can be washed endless amounts of time.

P*****  can be washed endless amounts of time. You can use plain water. Or just air it.

I've got Paramo coats, jackets, smocks, trousers, hats...held off on the underwear because of the 'whiff' comments.

Eventually bought some pants & T-shirts....totally whiff free.

Maybe it's a personal thing - I can't wear Acrylic - stinks very badly.

My Paramo smells of Paramo, not sweat. Gets washed every half dozen trips though.

Actually I like the Paramo smell, makes me feel all secure and snug and reminds me of good times outdoors. Maybe I'm just weird!

The smell is probably a sign that your garment is working well, keeping excess water away from your skin. As you own a Paramo coat you'll be happy to hear that combating smells is very easy (I quite often wear one in the lab and all day every day at work)

Firstly, the water repellency is easily maintained using Nikwax Tech Wash and TX-Direct Wash In. However, if washing in Tech Wash doesn't remove the smells (it's quite a gentle cleaner) you can happily wash your Paramo garment in a bio or non-bio detergent (at up to 50 deg C) without damaging it. Washing with Tech Wash after a detergent wash, followed by reproofing with Nikwax TX Direct Wash In will bring it back to tip top condition.

If that doesn't work, you can also happily send your Paramo garment for dry cleaner as unlike most membrane garments it's fully dry cleanable. Follow the same procedure and wash in Tech Wash and TX-Direct after dry cleaning.

Hope that helps.

I find I get used to it, sometimes when putting my hill gear on I think, this is honkin, but after 10 minutes or so the nose adjusts and I don't notice the smell for the rest of the day.

What is the strange smell of a NEW Paramo item then? That's the one major thing I've noticed about my new Velez Adventure smock, is this very distinct mildly perfumed aroma that it has. It's not a bad smell, It's just one I was not expecting. Does it originate from a factory proofing or something?

Perhaps I wouldn't risk it with an expensive jacket.  But someone in this forum recommended adding a capfull of Dettol when washing wiffy baselayers.  I use it periodically for my gym gear and it works a treat.  Normal cool washing doesn't appear to kill the bacteria.

There are two quite separate discussions going on here and it's safest not to mix-up the "destructions for getting rid of bad bacteria/BO smells in your jackets or base layers" with the discussion about the slightly perfumed smell of TX-10....
