Anyone got one of these? Any comments?

They are going cheapish at various places and I am looking for a 45l sack for 1-3 night trips. I'd ve had Macpac in size 3 before so reasonably confident it will fit but the only thing I am no sure about is whether there are straps to attach a sleeping mat to the side (preferably) or the underside of the pack...I use a short thermarest in summer and a full length ridgerest the rest of the year.

 Anyone know?

Do you mean the amp lite 45 or the amp race 40? Not seen an amp 45?

I've got the amp race 40, and you could probably attach a roll mat to the side (have never tried though), as long as its not too large in diameter. Great pack though, nice and light, and carries well.

I think the 40 is too small really...

I've got one of those! I always get me lites and me races fuddled up, but I recognise the picture. I would say it's a good sack. Is the ridgerest the non inflateable, ridgy grey mat? I use a cut down version of that, and instead of rolling it, I fold it and slip it inside, against the back pad. It works for me.

Having said that, there's no reason why you couldn't strap one to the main straps which pull the lid down, if you know what I mean. There's no lid straps, and I don't recall any on the bottom, either.

Thnaks trying to decide between this and the osprey Talon 44 - both fit pretty well but the latter has more attachments for bits and pieces...but its £35 more

I had a look at the Osprey, some of the clips looked a bit flimsy to me, as did some of the stretchy fabric. But, it was a very comfy fit.

I thought the same, but then the Osprey allows more stuff to be attached to the outside, axes, mats etc. Swings and roundabouts really!

Hi guys,

I work for Osprey and saw you expressing an interest in the Osprey brand. I thought I might be so bold as to answer a few questions that have arisen from your interesting discussion.

Mick W. Glad you found the Talon a comfy fit. Despite not being designed to be as durable as some of our other packs, the Talon is surprisingly durable for its light weight. The clip design used on the Talon range of packs are of the highest quality and just as strong as on any other pack we make, despite the slightly different aesthetic (they look pretty cool in white, no?). As for the stretch materials we use,  they consist of a stretch-woven nylon, very similar to those used in 'soft-shell' clothing. This material is very durable for its weight, with a very tightly knit outer face for high abrasion resistance. Hope this helps answer your query on 'flimsyness' (or lack of in this case!) Thanks.

James Butler 3. The Talon 44 is an excellent pack for going light and fast on multi-day trips, doing everything from climbing to walking to mountaineering. There are external sleeping mat straps on the bottom of then pack as well as bottom zip entry to help organise your gear. Stretch side-pockets, side compression straps and Ice axe/Walking pole loops give extra gear carrying capacity, topping the Talon 44 off as a lightweight all-round pack for a range of end uses. It also comes in some great colours as a bonus! Thanks.

I hope the above info is of some help in your pack decisions and discussions. More info can be found at our website if needed.

 Kind Regards,

 Martin
