Hi

Thinking of a fortnights walking here, got the Cicerone guide and Rough guide too, all looks very interesting.  Anyone been there recently and what was your thoughts?

 Thanks

al - I went 2 years ago (end of summer) and enjoyed it immensely - although the weather was a bit mixed. All sorts of outdoorsy things to do, and some great cycling and walking. Walks are very varied, from lakeside strolls to full-on mountain yomps. You can also cycle easily into nearby italy along a converted railway line. Make sure you've got a decent map as the locally available ones are pretty poor.

We stopped in kranjska gora (spelling?) - nice place, although the food was rather poor, both in the hotel and local restaurants. Also, the local tourist info office was remarkably unhelpful (no idea why). All in all though, pretty good

I stayed on a campsite in Kobarid, and the local food was fantastic - got to eat truffles at a local hotel restaurant because it was coming to the end of the season and the chef wanted to get rid of them. Would also pay a visit to Lake Bohinj - again a fantastic campsite right on the lake side, and easy access to the mountains via the cable car. Let me know if you want the campsite phone numbers and I'll dig out the details.

Cheers dicky n Hayley

Def looking at Lake Bohinj area for at least part of the time, for 2 day assault on Triglav and Vogel and stuff.  Good to know campsite is great, have details in my RG cheers.  Seems to be tons to do in such a small area

I climbed Triglav in 2004, on a three day trek -  started from Mojstrana and approached the mountain along  the Kot valley - from where the path rises steeply up to the mountain hut at Dom Valentina Stanica.  From there had to cross some snow on the way up to the pass which leads down to the Triglavski Dom Na Kredarici, where I stayed for the night.

Up early the next morning for the summit ascent (takes around 1 hour from the hut), not a difficult climb - metal pins and fixed steel ropes on the steepest parts - and the final ridge from Mala Triglav to the main summit is protected by a fixed rope (it's not very narrow anyway maybe 1 metre wide). Had great views from the top, descended by the same route to the hut and from there made my way down to  the Dolic saddle and via the Hribarice plateau to the seven lakes valley and stayed in the mountain hut there.

On the third day I followed the path from the hut up to Mala Ticarica and then down to Lake Bohinj for a swim in the lovely water.

Of course if you will be there for a fortnight you could find lots more to do, the ridge walk from Vogel looks like a good one. Also a visit to Bled for some easier walking and views of the beautiful  lake there.

I went for a week in sept 2004 - did a package 'Lakes and Mountains' trip staying in a hotel in Kransjka Gora (but also went round to Lake Bohinj for a day). The hotel was comfortable but the food was only ok, they didn't seem to have entirely broken free of austerity, lol. But the mountains were fantastic, very spectacular, and the weather was good almost every day at that time of year. I'd definitely go back, but next time I'd like to stay up high using huts or bivvying rather than being stuck with returning to the valley at night.

Took the family this last January on a Skiing holiday to Kranskja Gora......No snow though!!!!!!!!

Did alot of walking instead and it was tremendous, fantastic scenery and the mountain rivers run with turquoise tint to them.

We stayed at the hotel Leki supposedly a 4* gaff' but seemed more like a 3*. Echoing what others have said regards the food, very plain and unimaginative, but the beer is cheap and the hot chocolate is to die for.

What gear shop there are (not your run of the mill ski kit shops) are very very expensive and hold limited lines so don't forget your walking poles etc.

Can you wild camp in the hills -- ie night by night on a backpacking trip? Is it "properly allowed" (like Scotland) or "tolerated" (like the Lake District), or frowned on!?

Great to hear your views guys !

Zubald, according to Cicerone guide, wild camping NOT allowed anywhere in Slovenia, sadly, but there you go !  I had an idea of camping at the huts a la GR20, but not to be.

Seems to be tons of mountain huts though.

The two mountain huts I stayed in were o.k, did decent filling meals, drinks (including beer ). The only drawback with the huts that I stayed in though was that there was no showers , just washing facilities. Man, did I enjoy that swim in Lake Bohinj

I can recommend a good hostel that I stayed in near Bled. It's called Jakelj backpackers, easy to find on hostelworld.com. The location itself was a bit out of the way, but they provide a free shuttle bus to/from Bled, free pickups from the train station. Family run, very friendly and helpful, they can also organize outdoors activies such as rafting trips, etc.

Don't just stay on the Triglav side, go over to the Karavanke area east of the main road. There are some equally picturesque mountains, waterfalls and walking. Its not quite so crowded and you can usually come across a mountain hut even on shortish walks.

Incidentally I found the Slovenian maps to be excellent. Far better than Italian ones although that's not saying much! There's also a small book in English called 'How to Climb Triglav' which I managed to pick up in Ljubljana.

I also did a hike in the Karavanke range, up to mountain called Stol - right on the border with Austria. Great views from there aswell, there was a mountain hut just below the summit and many walking trails in that area.

Stupid question, but here goes.... will be camping and intending to leave tent pitched on site in the valley while I wander up mountain....what stuff do I need to take for the hut, sleepwise?  Sleep bag be enough?
Show/hide user stats
Yes - ample. Most locals will have daysac only. Hut give out slippers (no, really) and blankets too with those YHA style bed sheets and pillow covers so most will have nothing with them except a bottle of wine and some playing cards by way of overnight gear (but food and beer in hut is for sale). Booking is recommended as I have found myself sleeping on picnic benches outside or in the dining room. They don't turn away but you don't get the best beds obviously. The only thing huts did not easily provide were hill snacks so I suggest you carry a few of those.

I once worked for a bloke named Julian Alps!!! Strange coincidence, or perhaps his family owns the place, as his English was awful!!
