Which Boots?

I need new boots dont know what to get though only got into walking this year started with Skye was scary so for next few trips done less dodgy mountains but realise that grass bores me and is hard going rock is fun. My boots at the moment are old battered very scuffed leather boots and the soles are too soft they bend way too much for my liking.

Im looking at getting into more scrambling and ridges but still need comfort for walks in etc. Need boots that wont scuff i.e large rand and a sole that wont bend too much for rock.

Ive not done any winter walking climbing yet as not enough equipment will leave this till next year prob get full winter boots then. Any suggestions what I should get now?

Miendl borneos are a good option and adequate enough for most hillwalking and the  lowest  grade of scrambling that I occasionally do. .

Are available lined or unlined  and that is down to individual choice , I prefer lined but sweaty feet as never been a problem for me , mine sweat very little even on the warmest of days. Other people loathe lined footwear.

Its a tough one and very much depends on your own preferances , the lighter you can go the better I suppose ,but if you are after boots then these would fit the bill.

Imprtant thing is to try lots on ,everyones feet are different and boot sizes vary . (I would love to have some Scarpa,s but they are too narrow a fit to feel comfy for me)

as always the ones that fit are the best.......

if you want something that is more scrambling designed as a boot then look at

la sportiva trango (trek or S evo) trek is actually stiffer than S evo

scarpa charmoz

meindl alta via or matterhorn

hanwag crack safety

raichle all degree light or mt. envy

brasher telica

aku croda or edge

alot of these boots use the same vibram sole unit, excellent on rock, but be carefull in softer ground as it not as agressive on the tread so slips in mud occur

hth happy boot hunting

Hi Moody Moody,

Its tough finding your perfect balance with boots, especially when you don't have the boots in front of you to try on.

If you're fairly new to walking then it may not be the best idea to go straight into the stiffness of the 3-4 season boot. There are some really good, solid 3 season boots out there that will be perfect for scrambling but be more comfortable on your feet when walking than the stiffer 3-4 season boots. It's always worth remembering that you are likely to spend most of your time walking to and from the scramble and so it is just as important to cater for that as well.

 It would be worth checking out the following boots;

  • AKU vertigo - nice big rand and tough enough for scrambling and via ferrata
  • RAICHLE Mountain Trail - Comfotable full grain leather boot with high rand and fairly neutral fit
  • KAYLAND Contact - Tough 3 season boot with wide fit.
  • MEINDL Vakuum -  Comfortable wide leather boot with memory foam cushioning and all round rand.

Or for the more stiffer 3-4 season option;

  • GARMONT Tower - lightweight with a decent rand
  • LA SPORTIVA Trango S - Solid boot with excellent rand and stiff sole unit - quite thin fit
  • MEINDL Sella - Lightweight with stiff alpine sole - fairly wide fit

I hope this is of some help,

I would add the Scarpa nepals to your list to look at too. I love mine for scrambling in, the sole seems relatively sticky, and they have a huge rubber rand which is great for jamming in cracks.

Well I def need a stiff sole as really dodgy on some of the mountains ive climbed so far in my old boots with flexible sole.  Def need massive rand lots of the boots suggested dont have big enough ones, in one spring-autumn season in scotland I have pretty much destroyed the leather on the toes of my boots. They need to still be comfortable though as do go up some grassy mountains although I hate them rock is so much easier.

Does anyone rate the Meindl Himalya?

 Cant seem to find Meindl Alta Via anywhere
