Have I bought a lemon?

Hello and greetings from Darkest Scandinavia!

I've just bought a Lowe Alpine Appalachian Torso APS 5 65 + 15 litre rucksack from Ebay on a whim! Cost was 49 Pounds. Was this a good price? Is this a good rucksack? What are its pros & cons?

Also I hunt in vain for an article I saw on OutdoorsMagic a few days ago about a man falling to his death on Striding Edge, any idea how I can find this again (I want to go to the newspaper link in the article)?

New to OM I am, takes a while to work out what is where!

If I'm not mistaken, the sack you've bought is now discontinued by Lowe Alpine but retailed for roughly £95-£100 a couple of years ago. If I'm not mistaken (twice) then this is the side-pocketed version of the the Frontier which has/had bellows side pockets and compression straps and retailed for about £10 more.

All-in-all - a decent if not spectacular price for a good sack from a very good manufacturer of sacks.

I used to have an Appalachian, bought in about 1998 for £120. It was of good quality, a basic but functional design. I couldn't get comfortable carrying it though, so sold it to a friend.

A (male) friend used a female-specific version for a week long backpacking trip in August and found it very comfortable. If it fits you then it's a good buy

I got the article about the Striding Edge man falling off - maybe his girlfriend pushed him??!! You never know...

Pushed him deliberately! No, you're thinking of Wales aren't you? There was a case there where that happened in the nineteen-eighties I seem to recall, when some teenagers were mucking about together either in the mountains or near the coast; and one with a big backpack went over an edge following a push or shove and was then partly paralysed, but not killed I think.

Sounds too like you got yourself a very good backpack there for a very fair price indeed! So most definitely not a lemon, unless it is yellow, and making you cry because you are bitter about the whole purchase that is! Otherwise no worries there mate!
