Tent for 'Large' person

My brother is 6' 8" and is looking for a solo tent for the West Highland Way in May. It'd be fine if I could just check the dimensions listed on manufacturer websites and find which one is longest, but he also has size 19 (yes, nineteen) feet, and often ends up with his feet propping up the roof of sloping tents. So, does anyone have any tips? Almost resigned to a two person dome-style tent so that he can sleep diagonally.

Don't get me started on finding walking boots/shoes/any kind of footwear......

My guess would be you will be stumped on finding any solo tents for some one 6'8" to lay straight out in the longest i have seen is norm about 220cm, generaly they are shorter.

I do believe "Stephensons" will make to order a tent for the vertically gifted

In terms of length to lie down a Stephenson's 2R would be long enough as the 'vestibule' isn't really and is actually all part of a continuous inner tent.

With a large front door and windows it weighs 1.5k - 'bout the same as an Akto but with loads of extra space as it's really a two person tent.

The challenge might be the height to sit up. The 3R gives you the greater height along the full length, though I've never seen one in the flesh, but may still not give him the extra height he needs so talking to them about a bespoke one might still be the way forward..

For height, a single skin pyramid or tepee, type like the Golite Hex, which you can still just about get here or Black Diamond Mega light could be a better option if th other dimensions work out for him. Not sure if May is already midge time on the WHW but, if it is, with these might need to think about some mossie protection too!

My 6'8" friend (imaginatively nicknamed "Big Dave", where do we get these from, eh?) has had some success with Vau de tents.  Being German, they're made for Germans, who tend to be a fair bit taller than Brits.  The Hogan Ultralight 1 has a 220m inner and the back wall has a steep slope on it, so he'd stand a pretty good chance with that, and it weighs in at 1.5 Kg.  Not much chance of sitting up straight well inside, I'm afriad, at that height...  Taurus Ultrlight is similar dimensions but a little heavier and cheaper, IIRC.

I'm 6ft 10ins tall, so taller than your brother, although only size 14 boots. In my experience, 220cm is plenty long enough to sleep in. The greater difficulty for me is more finding a tent with adequate headroom to sit up reasonably comfortably and dress/undress without too much contortion. My present tents are a TN Laser and a TN Argon 900. Both are nominally 2-man tents, but I find are quite comfortable for my solo use without being too heavty to carry. The one man 'equivalents' (Laser Comp & Argon 800) would I think be too cramped.

I've also in the past owned a TN Solar, which was a very comfortable solo tent, and a VauDe Mark II, which I used mostly motorbike touring. I found the VauDe to be slightly short and tended to sleep diagonally, though that was not a problem for solo use.

That's all really useful stuff, thanks!

Try a Hilleberg Nallo 2 - quite long anyway and you could sleep diagonally.  If he's that big, the extra weight for this two man tent won't worry him!  Great tent, too.

Big Agnes Seedhouse tents look quite long according to the spec's and might be worth a look. Click here.
