Looking into getting a cheap sat nav system for the car which isn't going to be too difficult to learn to use - not because I'm crap with technology, but I just don't want to be arsed to spend hours with a 200 page small-print instruction booklet.

Any recommendations? Don't want top of the line stuff - just something that works, is user-friendly and cheap!!

Thanks

Hi Kate,

I've had a TomTom for a couple of years and had no problems. I bought a couple of cheap AA ones for my staff and have ended up replacing them the components just failed. I have replaced them with TomTom Ones - 3rd edition. At around £90 they are good value.

BTW - By the AA road map as well IMHO Sat Navs should always be used in conjunction with a road map.

Hi Kate

Garmin Sat-navs are so simple to use and learn, the latest editions are all Wide Screen but if you stay away from them you will find yourself a bargin to be had (not widescreen)

Like mine i got from Halfords for only £99.00 The Garmin Nuvi 200....

Slightly dearer here but shop about and should get one cheaper Halfords and yes i know its pink .mines not lol

I only bought one after the wife got 3 points for speeding by a mobile speed camera, they are programmed in and you can update online, but now she loves it and wouldnt do without it to get her further afield and to pastures new

A few tips.

  • Dont leave in car when not in use
  • Dont leave the sucker dirt mark on windows(thiefs know you then have one put away somewhere)clean it regally.
  • Dont leave window sucker attached(they will break in for the unit)
  • use around unfamiliar areas for speed cameras
  • Great for an Estamated time of arrival

Hope this helps

Thanks, Diddy, but I ain't buying a pink satnav!!! Even if it is cheaper than unpink ones. I was prepared to pay £10 extra for an unpink mobile (wanted the cheapest, and pink was the cheapest).

Thanks for the tips too!

A few tips.......

Its sometimes better to remove it before you enter somewhere like a car park.  The thieving B******ds check the entrances to see who is using one before they park up.

....and - buy a road map too.

I have heard very good things re: Tom Tom.  My best mate and my dad (2 different people - promise) both use them and love them.  Depends how cheap though as I've not seen a tomtom below £100, admittedly not been looking though.

checked amazon - this is the non widescreen version of what my dad uses. Usable straight out of the box.

Kate, I used my Tom Tom straight out of the box, without consulting the manual.  It really is that simple to operate.

I'd agree with all the useful tips that have been given by others on this thread.

Update: TomTom arrived this morning and I had the same experience as Tel - used it without even bothering to open the book of words. It's exactly the sort of thing I wanted. Thanks to all for the recommendations and advice.

ps - why did anyone think I might be driving around without a road atlas in the car?!!

Its ok she's got dodgy knees and I'm an international athlete (I did run the Edinburgh Marathon). So long as she does not get in the car and run us both over. Assuming the TomToms fully charged.

I wouldn't want to get blood, guts and gore all over my lovely light blue car.

I've got blood in abundance, some guts but a little short on gore at the moment.
Tom Tom One Kate - you won't regret it!

I've got a Tom Tom ONE and wouldn't be without it. It's got me places I've never even heard of without too much drama and I was really impressed when I was driving through Scotland that I saw blue (sea) on it. Sad but true!

Agree with all the comments on the car theives. We take ours out of the car and wipe the windscreen.

Do you remember how pleasant life was before things had instruction booklets?

One of my New Year's resolutions was not to buy anything that needed one.
