 Hi Guys, My friend (yes, I do have one, really!!!  ) wants to test out his new backpacking gear so we're off in a couple of weeks (when the weathers a bit warmer hopefully  ) to the Lakes and as he likes the Haweswater area the that's the area he'd like to camp. Anyone recommend a decent remote spot up in them there hills? Cheers

If you start from Helton or Bampton (where overnight parking is not such a problem as at the end of Haweswater) then there are some good spots if you walk over Loadpot Hill and drop of High Street towards Hayeswater, or from Nan Bield towards Small Water — although the latter is not that remote. There are quite a few possible pitches on little "platforms" before you get down to the tarn. Another spot is near the top of Gatescarth Pass. Makes a nice round trip as well.

Thanks Guy, good food for thought, I'll check out the map properly when I get home. Incidently, is overnight parking at Haweswater end a problem?. Only ever parked there for a day when I was out walking that way last year (obviously wasn't looking for wild camping spots at the time  ) but good to know it can be an issue as that's where I was thinking of leaving the car if we were to go up from the west side.

I'm not sure if there are signs at the end of Haweswater asking you not to park, but it does get very busy and there have been a few thefts from cars there.
There is a good access point by way of a road just before Bampton where a few cars can be parked, and cos it's close to the village there's less chance of theft and/or damage.
Another option might be to park near either the old or new church at Martindale (the old one is further up the valley) and head up to High Street from there. There are some really nice routes up and they're quieter than going from the head of Haweswater, although it's not as easy to make a logical circuit.

.jpg) Have left my car there a couple of times overnight without any problems,but you can never be sure!! Blea tarn?(water?)Small water are great places for a wilcamp,feels remote and great views to be had . I love that part of the lakes ENJOY!!

 left my car at haweswater the other week but arrived v late. there are a good few spots around haweswater in the woods which are v close to the carpark so you can arrive after all the cars have left, camp and then be ready to go first thing. i left my car there for a couple of nights. if you have gps or its a clear night it's pretty easy to do some night walking up to the tarns near there.

 We did a wild camp up Mardale Ill Bell from the Mardale Car Park a few months ago. Great spot and the views and surrounding area were fantastic. Check out the piccies here. We went up to Small Water to see if we could camp there but its often got people already there. If the weather is right though go up the Nan Bield Pass and turn right at the shelter towards Mardale Ill bell then just about twenty metres along on the right there is a few sheltered spots, cracking views both out over Haweswater and the other way too. In the morning you'll already have done most of the ascent so a nice easy stroll can be had over Mardale Ill Bell, then High Street, then Kidsty Pike then back down to the car park. Plus there may the bonus of seeing the red deer herds as we saw.

 Last time I wild camped up around High Street, I wild camped ON High Street, on the mild slope down towards the Straights of Riggindale. Very nice spot it was too.

Thanks guys, seems plenty to choose from. Talked to my mate last night and seems he's been let loose with a map and now considering going up from Hayswater  , anyone know if the Car Park there is ok for overnight parking?

 Some great camping next to Angle tarn really nice spot on far side of tarn towards the drystone wall where the stream leaves the tarn. You could always pay a couple of quid to park at Sykeside campsite if you are worried about leaving your car. Im a bit bad and just abandon it for days and always been fine (lucky?).
