Icebreaker Base Layers
What's the sizing like?

I need some new base layers and after reading loads of good reviews about Icebreaker stuff I thought I'd push the boat out a bit and treat myself. What's the sizing like? How would they compare to my Helly Hansen Lifa kit?

doesn't their website give sizes?

they do offer this piece of priceless information in case you get confused

"In cases when your body measurements are midway between two sizes, go to the smaller size for a tighter fit or the larger size for a looser fit. "

If it's any help, Craig, the men's small fits me fine, which suggests the sizing (at least of the small) is fairly 'standard', so if you're ordering over the net, I'd go for whatever size you take normally (which is a bit odd from the looks of your avatar )

Yep, that's really good of them to offer that advice isn't it, Parky. We'd never have worked that out for ourselves.

Comparing the size guides on the Helly Hansen and Icebreaker web sites suggests that the Icebreaker stuff is quite generous in size compared to HH, especially in the small/medium sizes. I was also wondering about things like length (arms and torso).

Also, I know we can expect merino wool to shrink a little after the first wash. How much should I allow for that? I don't want to end up with another Alpkit Bleat which, after washing once, was completely useless and became an expensive cleaning cloth.

Take a look at www.chocolatefishmerino.co.uk same people who used to make for Icebreaker before they moved manufacture to China. Also www.embersmerino.co.uk .Got a l/s crew and a s/s tee from here pleased with them.

Just had a look at the choc fish site and I like their womens cami but theres no photo of anyone wearing it, has anyone got one? it looks like the straps are shorter than I want and it will sit to high.

Or does anyone have their actual e mail addy because I cant make the " contact us" thing work.

Icebreaker stuff is generously sized.  Shrinkage is expected 5% but it's very stretchy stuff.  I'm not exactly slim and fit a medium in icebreaker baselayer.

just a thought - blacks stock icebreaker stuff.  If you wanted to get an idea of fit then you could go try some on? That's of course assuming you have a blacks somewhere nearby.

Thanks Owen. I didn't realise Icebreaker had moved their production to China. And they're still more expensive than Chocolate Fish which is apparently made in NZ?

Roger, thanks for the info about shrinkage. I've been browsing the Chocolate Fish site and like the look of their stuff too. I've just sent them an email asking about that. There's a Blacks store a few minutes walk from my work so I may pay them a visit next week.

Jules, I just emailed them on merino@chocolatefish.co.uk.

Thanks everybody.

Helly Hansen Large = Icebreaker Medium. I wear both in those sizes and the fit is identical.

I'm 6 foot 2 tall with a 40 inch chest and wear a large.  Body length is great for tucking in trousers and the sleeves have plenty of length if maybe a tad long but its comfortable and works well.  I'm wearing a Mondo half zip top.

I bought mine in Blacks as I was able to try it on but recently the local Field and Trek store have a massive sale and they had icebreaker tops with 20% off so may be worth a look if you're near one.

I've found another NZ company selling merino/polyester mix baselayers. Male and female range. The hoodie looks good. Cheap postage too!

I'm normally an XL but Icebreaker L fits me best.

There is still some smart wool xxl s in Swansea TK max, at an even higher discount than before, about 30% of RRP not 50%
