I'm wondering about making a lightweight groundsheet so that I can use just the flysheet of my single man tent saving around 700gms - ie the flysheet would be a tarp.

I see mention of such groundsheets weighing a 100gms or so - what material is used for this and where can I get it ?

Thanks for any assistance.

Many thanks, Michael  -  that solves the 'where get it bit' but can you, or someone, help on the type of material that is going to be light enough but strong enough. ?

I'm using a AMK Heatsheet, after reading about tarpers using them on US sites. Very light. I've only used it once so can't vouch for it's durability. Have to be very careful in site selection.

I've also got a few 'homemade' groundsheets cut out of old tents. The Gossamer Gear polycro sheets are another lightweight option. Winwood Outdoor has them in this country, but the're out of stock at the moment.

After some considerable delay they're back in stock. My order arrived a couple of days ago, but unfortunately I haven't had time to test the sheet and offer an opinion on durability. It certainly feels as though it'll do the trick, however.

The GG Polycro I found - Id forgotten that I'd bookmarked this website

www.francistapon.com

He was in TGO recently - walked the Rockies carrying something in the order of 6lbs!

Thanks guys.

This should do the job

In the States a lot of people use Tyvek. This is the waterproof membrance used on roofs.

If you know a roofer I bet you could get an offcut for free.

Apparently it is a bit stiff initially, but if you put it in a washing machine with NO powder it softens up.
