Which lightweight ruck?

Hi all.

I'm after an inexpensive (ok, cheap) lightweight rucksack in the 55 litre range. I'm desperate to keep the weight down to sub 1.5 kilos whilst retaining a decent level of abrasion resistance. My pack weight ranges from 12-15 kilos and I'll be using it for overnight hikes.

The GoLites certainly seem to do the job but the cost, for me, is a little prohibitive (I'm strapped for cash). The Kimmlite / OMM range also looks rather tasty, and I've seen them going for less than the GoLites.

Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks for your advice guys and girls.

There is a guy on ebay selling orange mountain movers (KIMM) reasonably cheap. There is also a pod crag sac on now, ending in a day or two. Lowe Alpine also do a hyperlite range around 1.6kg for around 75quid. Being from Yorkshire, im rather economical....Just bought a pod black ice,2 months old for 70 quid delivered, and it had a new platypus and tube thingy in it!!! Well good. Shop around!!

I bought one of the aforementioned Kimmlite MM's from this guy recently. Bear in mind they're the older model tho'. The latest incarnation is a bit less "minimalist".

But they're Orange for f**k's sake! What better reason to buy one?

Jon, I once read on this site that there is cheap, there's light an there's tough. You get to pick any too. If you decide on the last two, can I recommend the Osprey Atmos 50l. A superb pack. I have used one for Munro bagging camping trips and can't overpraise it. It has survived some serious ill treatment without a mark, is a joy to carry and seems bottomless. ( I have recently returned from a two night outing when I got my normal stuff in plus crampons and a down jacket and had almost nothing in the 'side' pockets. )

Looking up prices I came accross numerous positive reviews, eg:

"I highly recomend this bag! Its the second time I have owned an atmos 50 (the last one was stolen). The durability is second to none, I used this bag to hike 2200 miles on the appalachian trail in America. Where the bag is a big hit amoungst the light weight hiking community. The air speed takes the bag off your back, creating a comfortable ride. I am a gear head and have never owned a bag any where near as good as this!"

Unfortuneately, it is likely to knock you back about £120 - ouch!

I can second Simon's comments on the Osprey - a smashing sack, but a bit too 'technical' for me. I own and still use one BTW.

But I also have a CRUX AK47 - it is lighter but about the same price - this is a top sack too with no frills - saves around 400g from what I remember.

I can second the Atmos 50 as a highly praiseworthy pack.

yo i'm on the OMM mountain mover just now... bought a villain last summer and was worried about the size so when it broke (wasn't me!!) on the first trip out and i took it back to the shop (wildtrak they're on here somewhere and do OMM sacs quite cheap)

i took advantage and bought the slightly bigger mountain mover which i have found more than adequate even for a wet cold weekend in mid winter

Jon,

how tall are you? If you are fairly small and really want to maximise you value for money, I'd say get a Crux A70 from here. It's bigger than you were suggesting, but for the weights you are talking of it should be ideal; plus it incredibly light and by all accounts the volume can be adjusted quite easily to cope with smaller loads. I have an AK57 so can vouch for build quality.

Cheers guys, so many helpful suggestions and lots of useful links. I shall, as always, ponder a while and make my choice.

I have a couple of packs at the moment but tend to use a Highlander Forces 55 (mainly because it's tough and cheap and good for bushcraft) but for hiking I need something lighter than it's 2+ kilo unpacked weight. It is my best fitting ruck but that extra weight is ... unfriendly.
