Morning all, I thought I should share the good news. I have recently been suffering from the common failure of the Piezo igniter unit. I contacted Jetboil and they suggested contacting the UK distributor, Lyon Equipment. Having been in touch with them I can only comment on how good Lyon have been. They were friendly, helpful and genuinely interested in user feedback. I asked if they would mind me posting their detail on here and they said that was fine.  I've had good dealings with Lyon in the past too. However, the basic problem could well be that piezo ignition units are just crap to an unacceptable degree and can't be relied on. My experience of them certainly doesn't have me thinking of them as a great feature... Pete.

Hi Pete, I can't argue with that at all. The design of the igniter unit on the Jetboil is flawed. It is far too exposed to damage. I like the Jetboil concept and am willing to accept its limitations. If Lyon are willing to continue sending replacements then I'll keep trying to fix the problem and carry a lighter and matches as back up when the unit inevitably fails.

I thought mine was broken until someone suggested just bending the wee lighter tip closer to the mesh. I did so and hey presto, it's good as new. I must have knocked it too wide apart for the spark to catch.

That's a common fault. 1/4 of an inch is Jetboil's preferred distance. Mine was only intermitently sparking and sometimes in the wrong place. Normally this a symptom of the ceramic insulating pipe having a crack.

 Just carry one nof these babies. Problem solved! (my Jetboil peizo is tempramental as well) turboflame

 This has been a very long standing design problem with all of their stoves; and I for one sadly don't ever recall seeing it anywhere written/promised that the makers want to address the situation in any way, visa-vie replacing the naff ignition unit there.

They do an outdoors turbo flame lighter now as well I see, with a bit of rubber protecting the outer of the fuel tank bit there.

 I've had the same problem with my jetboil, but the bend it in technique seems to have fixed it. It was still sparking properly before, but the spart didn't take. Bending the arm in about 1mm seems to have made it 100% reliable, at least in my 10 minutes of testing last night. Beats 100% failure before anyway. Certainly shows this exposed piece of metal is very tempermental and therefore a clear design fault.

 I sent mine to Lyon and they replaced the igniter as well as sending me a complimentary service kit. They also suggested making something to protect the igniter in transit. I cut down an old aerosol cap to fit over the burner and igniter. It all packs in this order: cylinder, burner, cut down cap, and Jetboil lid. Over 12 months later the igniter still works perfectly.

Hi Steve, Great minds and all that! I was thinking doing exactly the same thing. All it needs to keep it in place is a dab of glue in the igniter housing and something to protect it in transit. An aerosol cap will do the job perfectly. The spare igniter arrived today from Lyon and my stove now starts on the button each time, it's like having an old friend back!
